EDAC at 6 months:
Accredited Individuals Share Their Stories
It has been 6 months since the EDAC exam's launch, and the program has gained 166 accredited individuals!

Are you still wondering whether or not you should become EDAC accredited? Hear first-hand from three individuals who share experiences on how they prepared for the exam, and explain why they decided to become accredited.

Kristin Dufek, Senior Design Architect at Eppstein Uhen
On studying: "I read through the back issues of the HERD Journal and captured a lot of good methodology. I also went through the CHD research reports online and read the study guides cover to cover. Additionally, I attended a Nurture study group. I think just being involved daily on research, design, and construction of healthcare projects gave me good background to build upon to take the exam.

Why did you get accredited? "I chose to do EDAC because I was genuinely excited about a formal way to differentiate those who actively research, apply, and test their designs against a hypothesis – because it is the right thing to do as design professionals."

Ashley Dias, Architectural Intern at HKS
On studying: "Studying for the EDAC exam was one of the more pleasant studying experiences I've had. While reading the study guides I often found myself relating what I was learning about the evidence-based design process to the project I was on at work.

This turned out to be a useful study strategy as the EDAC exam is scenario-based, with many questions asking you to apply the process you've learned to a particular situation."

Why did you get accredited? "I chose to go through the EDAC program because I believe healthcare designers must demonstrate that they understand the principles of the EBD process in order to achieve credibility for themselves, their designs, and the industry."

Karl Kowalske, Architect at Diekema Hammann
On studying: "I studied along and read the study guides twice. I took notes the first time, skimmed the second time, and anwered the quiz questions after each chapter. Use the study guides and think logically related to a research agenda."

Why did you get accredited? "I think it is important for our firm to have staff with this knowledge. It allows current and potential clients to understand where to start if they are interested in the process. If evidence-based design is going to be successful, designers need to have a methodology and the support to discuss the topic with clients.
