Oak Lane Day Care                                  May '09

Family Tie-Dye Event

Oak Lane's annual Tie-Dye Day is coming up on Saturday, May 16  from 10 am to 12 pm and the whole family is invited. We supply all the materials and all you need to bring is something to dye (100% cotton) and your creativity. We only use the highest quality dyes that create amazing bright colors that won't fade. Since the whole process can be rather messy we always set up tables right outside the day care, which requires good weather. If it rains, we will reschedule for Saturday, May 23.

A donation of $5 per family is greatly appreciated to cover the costs of all the supplies.

Join us for dinner!

Bring your friends, family, neighbors and collegues and join us for lunch or dinner at Stadium Grille in West Chester. Stadium Grille will donate 20% of every meal to Oak Lane Day Care. Our last fundraising dinner at Isaac's was a great success. Many people came out to support the day care and we ended up breaking the restaurants fundraising record! So, let's do it again. Pass around the flyer and then make sure to bring it with you to the restaurant so that Oak Lane receives 20% of the total cost of your meal. You have the option of dining-in or takeout.

Speaking of fundraisers....

It's not too late to make a contribution to our Annual Giving Fund. So far, 41% of parents have participated and we have raised a total of $3410! If you're not sure if you've already made a donation, let me know and I'd be happy to check our records.

Welcome

Please join me in welcoming Gannon Winter and his parents Jeannette and Jason. They have joined the Oak Lane community at the end of April. Gannon is in the Older Toddler classroom and has already made many new friends.

 A Great Idea!

Children's birthday parties are a fun event but often leave the birthday child with numerous presents that he or she doesn't really need. Kim Glynn, mom of Colin and Lilli in the preschool class, had a wonderful idea for her children's recent birthday party. Instead of simply sending out invitations and letting the guests decide what to bring, she asked everybody to bring a book. On Monday morning, Colin and Lilli walked into the day care with a basket full of all the books they had received at their party and donated them to Oak Lane. The other children were excited about all the new books and some of them recognized the books they had given. But to the teachers surprise, nobody claimed possession of "their" book and everybody shared and took turns.

Infants and Young Toddlers

April has been a fun month for the infants and young toddlers. We have been doing a lot of dancing, reading, singing and practicing our pleases, thank-you's, and sharing skills. Coloring and painting have been fun, too. Just wait until you see their Mother's Day surprise!

T. Savannah brought in her new cat "Fedora" for one afternoon. What a cutie! The children loved to hear all about its adventures. Hopefully, we'll have more playground time soon so that the children can go on their own adventures. Please remember sunscreen and appropriate clothing as the weather gets warmer.

For lunchtime, please consider packing a variety of finger foods because they always give the children a great sense of independence and enjoyment. If you're not sure what to pack, we'd be happy to provide you with some suggestions.

Older Toddlers

Our class has been enjoying puzzles big and small and all the children are getting really good at staying on task and completing the puzzles. Sometimes they work together in small groups and other times they prefer to do a puzzles by themselves. But they are always very proud of their accomplishment! The children have also been enjoying other activities involving fine moter skills such as pegs and legos. It is amazing to see how much more thought they put into the things they build and create.

We celebrated Easter by making bunny faces on plates and decorating simple bag baskets for the easter eggs.  We had fun dying eggs with the preschool class. The children choose their colors and then more or less patiently waited until their eggs were done. Tie-dye butterflies were also fun to make. We used coffee filters onto which the children colored with markers. Then we sprayed them with water and the colors created beautiful patterns for the wings.

With the sometimes nicer weather, we've been able to go outdoors more often and have enjoyed walking around campus. Our walks are getting longer and longer as their little feet can carry them further and further. We are looking forward to many more sunny days, walks and outdoor playtime.

We also have a new classmate. His name is Gannon and our group is happy to have another boy. Welcome Gannon and his family!

Preschoolers

Hooray, we succesfully completed the alphabet. X-week was exciting as we talked about x-rays and xylophones. Thanks to Liam for sharing the x-ray of his leg with the class. During Y-week we practiced yo-yo spinning and we made yarn Y's. Finally it was Z-week. We read many books about zebras and zoos.

We celebrated Earth Day on April 22nd by sowing spruce tree seeds in little pots. The children put the soil in the pots and then carefully placed the tiny seeds in them. We are watering our plants daily and are hoping for some sunshine. However, one sprout has already begun growing and the children are very excited about.

We enjoyed the very warm days in April and made a couple of trips to the lake. The children enjoyed playing in the sand at the "beach" and walking to the frog pond. This week is jungle week and we will continue with themes for the next month.
