"Mostly Mozart" to be memorable

The masterful music of Mozart makes for a memorable evening at the Koger Center during “Mostly Mozart” Saturday at 7:30 p.m., presented by Family Medicine Centers of South Carolina.

It’s an evening of true master works, as SCP Music Director Morihiko Nakahara highlights some of the composer’s “crowning achievements.”

mw3_graham_webThe first showcases SCP principal clarinet Doug Graham as the evening’s featured soloist, taking center-stage for the Mozart Clarinet Concerto. A fixture, in the Columbia music scene Graham’s skill has delighted area audiences for more than two decades. He is sponsored by Liz & Hoyt Wheeler.

“Mostly Mozart” is perhaps the highlight of what is Graham’s last season with the SCP. Graham announced that he is retiring upon the completion of the 2011/2012 season, and this performance gives audience and orchestra alike the opportunity to show their appreciation for a remarkable career.

mw3_BoltonEllenberg_VanessaHaynes_webAfter intermission, the program transitions from a current star to two rising stars of piano. Vanessa Meiling Haynes and Bolton Ellenberg, second- and third-prize winners of the 2011 Arthur Fraser International Concerto Competition – held annually in conjunction with the Southeastern Piano Festival at USC – collaborate on the first movement of the Mozart Concerto No. 10 for Two Pianos. Read more about the SEPF below. Haynes and Ellenberg are sponsored by PHT Services, Ltd.

Closing the evening is Mozart’s grandiose Symphony No. 41, “Jupiter,” the final symphony written by the composer before his death in 1791.

Fauré’s Masques et bergamasques opens the concert before Mozart’s music takes over for the evening.

Tickets are $47, $39, $29, $21 and $17 and available through Capitol Tickets online, by phone at 803.251.2222 or at the Carolina Coliseum Box Office. Student and military discounts are available.

Begun last season, the SCP’s “Music for a Cause” initiative allows the SCP to help a diverse group of seven fellow non-profit organizations raise money and awareness for their causes. The partner for the Nov. 5th concert is Pets, Inc. Read more below!

Thoughts from Morihiko

narrow_mn“When I was in sixth grade, the music of Mozart ignited my lifelong love for classical music. Before that time, I had studied piano at home and enjoyed my music classes at school, but music was not something I felt passionate about – like baseball or history. It all changed one day, when I heard this incredibly beautiful music on the radio – Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23. My ‘research’ into this composer led me to his Clarinet Quintet, which promptly made me beg my mother for a Yamaha student-model clarinet. So began my formal training in music.

I’m certain that many of you can recount moments like this, when you first realized your love for music. Perhaps Mozart plays a role in many of your stories. On this program, we highlight some of Mozart’s crowning achievements as an orchestral composer.

Doug Graham, our incomparable principal clarinetist, joins the orchestra in the autumnal glow of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto. Two prize winners of the annual Arthur Fraser International Concerto Competition performs a movement of Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos – one prodigy performing the music of the most famous prodigy. Mozart’s final symphony – the inventive, grandiose ‘Jupiter’ – closes the evening. French composer Gabriel Faure’s homage to Mozart’s time, Masques et bergamasques, opens this special concert.”

About Pets, Inc.

Pets, Inc. was founded in January 1992 by Patricia McQueen and Jane Brundage.

Many pet problems are due to overpopulation, pure and simple. The solution to this is just as simple: Spay & Neuter. It's not a complicated matter, but it must be addressed on a grand scale. Rescuing and placing 25 or 30 animals a year is noble but will not seriously impact the problem. If we are to end the misery we must be willing to commit to an aggressive long-term solution to overpopulation.

PETS, Inc. has developed programs to address the problems from the point of rescue, through the rehabilitation and adoption processes and then, going a step further, to insure the animal has a reasonably good chance for successful integration into the family by addressing its training and emotional needs.

Learn more, and browse adoptable pets, at http://www.petsinc.org/.
