Dear Friend of the San Elijo Lagoon,
BioBlitz finds new plant, four bats!
Among 729 different species of living organisms found at the San Elijo Lagoon during the 2009 BioBlitz were four kinds of bats not previously confirmed there and one species of 'everlasting,' a flowering plant, which had not been found at the Lagoon before.

A variety of children's activities and other programs kept visitors entertained during the 2009 Lagoon Day celebration on May 16 while scientists surveyed the Lagoon to identify all species of living organisms found. View more pictures.
More than two dozen science experts from around the region surveyed the Lagoon and found birds: 109 species;algae: 86;
fungi: 4; plants: 232; marine invertebrates: 8; freshwater invertebrates: 9; insects: 213; spiders: 28; fish: 16; amphibians & reptiles: 10; and mammals: 12

Exciting Events in June
NEW: Guided Walk for Young Families:
Saturday, June 6, 10 am. Focus: "Keeping Cool" - how the plants and animals of the Lagoon survive the summer heat. Easy walking. Meet at Rios Ave. trailhead.
Monthly Bird Count:
Monday, June 8, 7:30 am - 12 noon. Meet at Rios Ave. trailhead.
Guided Nature Walks:
NEW: Every Saturday, 10 am. Meet at the nature center.
Also: Saturday, June 13, 9 am - 11 am. Meet at Rios Ave. trailhead.
Volunteer Work Party
Saturday, June 20, 9 am - 11 am. Help out with habitat restoration and trail maintenance. Contact ralph@SanElijo.org for details & directions.
Encinitas Environment Day
Sunday, June 7: Visit the Conservancy booth at Cottonwood Creek Park from 10 am to 4 pm. Get more information.
