Lagoon News E-Update: August 2009
Dear Friend of the San Elijo Lagoon,
We know how to party!
If you want to party, we can show you how! Join us at one of our monthly Work Parties, and you'll have the time of your life. On the 3rd Saturday of each month we meet at a different location in and around the Lagoon to dig, scrape, plant, repair, clean, remove, build -- if there is something to do, we do it! And we have lots of fun. Send a message to workparties@SanElijo.org to find out where this month's party will be held. We hope to see you on August 15th.

A Special Bird Visitor in the Lagoon!:
A visitor to the Lagoon created quite a stir this summer! The
little creature is none other than a single Yellow-green Vireo (Vireo
flavoviridis), probably a 'vagrant' who has deviated from his migration
route and ended up at our wonderful lagoon.

Photo: Trent R. Stanley
From
the San Diego Bird Atlas: "Though the Yellow-green vireo breeds almost
entirely in Middle America, barely crossing the border along the Rio
Grande in southernmost Texas, it is highly migratory, wintering in
Amazonian Peru and Bolivia. In California it is a rare, but now annual
*fall* vagrant, mainly along the coast.
According to the Bird
Atlas, there are no previous recorded sightings of this bird in the
summer in California, the closest being a sighting in Gila Bend, AZ in
1980!
As of press time, our little visitor has apparently left the area, but keep your eyes peeled for this hearty winged traveler, who is so far from home!

Hot Tip:
During
the summer months, it is best to visit the Lagoon in the morning or
late afternoon hours, and to always wear a hat and bring enough water.
