Dear Geoffrey,

"No plastic bag, straw, or plastic box with that bean burrito, thank you!"
Calendar of Upcoming Events

February Restoration Event to Focus on Invasives

February's restoration event (aka, 'Work Party') will focus on invasive pest plant removal on the south side of the Lagoon.  These plants, imported from lands far away and spreading rapidly in the Lagoon, have a tendency to disrupt the natural systems of the Lagoon -- so we take them out!  Plants such as iceplant, fennel, cocklebur, tamarisk, arundo, castorbean -- these are all plants that are native to other places, but not here!  Invasive pest plant removal is fun and rewarding work, and you are invited to join us.

We've implemented a new registration system this month, so be sure to visit the registration form on our web site to sign up.  Paul and Sue in arundo.jpgAs always, snacks are provided by our good friends at Adventure16.  Bring a reusable bottle for water (provided).  Look carefully in this photo and you will see Conservancy Board member Paul Worthington and County Ranger Sue Bashore, up to their ears in a patch of Castor bean, which they dispatched on a recent restoration event.   Thank you Paul and Ranger Sue!

'The Great Pacific Garbage Patch,' A lecture by Captain Charles Moore, Tuesday, March 2nd, 7:00 pm

map.jpgThe Great Pacific Garbage Patch …

A Sea of Simmering Synthetic Soup …

the plastic concoction that is poisoning our oceans … our planet … our bodies…

A Recipe for Disaster --

Take 5,000,000 square miles of ocean.  Mix in 850,000 pieces of colorful plastic per square mile. Infuse all ingredients into the food web of fish, seabirds, marine mammals & microscopic organisms.  Simmer for a decade until the plastic doubles in area.  Serve to humankind.

Date/Time

Tuesday March 2nd, 7:00 pm

Location

Debin Hall,

Solana Beach Presbyterian Church

(How to get there)

SE corner of Lomas Santa Fe Drive & Stevens Avenue, entrance across from the Earl Warren Junior High School/Solana Beach Public Library complex on Stevens Avenue.

Captain Charlie Moore’s research on pollution of the Pacific Ocean by plastic trash has opened up new awareness of an unexpected source of physical and chemical dangers for the oceans, the planet, and human health.  Moore’s work in the North Pacific Ocean Gyre has focused worldwide attention on the enormous area now known as the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch."

Moore's talk, "Research and Discovery in Our Synthetic Sea," is free and open to the public. He came upon the Pacific Garbage Patch by accident 12 years ago, on his way back from a sailing race in Hawaii. The garbage patch includes light bulbs, bottle caps, tooth brushes, plastic bottles, and tiny pieces of broken-down plastic, each the size of a grain of rice. It is an area of widely dispersed trash that doubles in size every decade and is now believed to be roughly twice the size of Texas.
