It's Summer at the Reserve!
The summer months bring exciting sights and sounds to enjoy:
- Large
groups of terns gather in post-breeding aggregations at the Reserve,
periodically rising up in unison for no apparent reason but with a clamorous
cacophony of calls only to quickly resettle in another area of mudflat.
- Catkins have matured, cottony seeds
set loose in the breeze, and the dense willow thicket provides shelter and food
for nesting grosbeaks, and marauding insects.
- A tiny
little two-toned insect, half black and half tan, its presence marked with a
self-produced dollop of foam which protects it from predators and the drying sun, the spittle bug can now be seen commonly along the trails.

Willow catkins, a spittle bug nymph, and a flock of terns at the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve.
During the summer months, it is best to visit the Lagoon in the morning or late afternoon hours, and to always wear a hat and bring enough water.
