Lagoon News e-Update for Jaunuary 28, 2010
Dear Geoffrey,
Andy Mauro to Kick Off Our Winter Lecture Series
The Conservancy is pleased to present a series of informative lectures beginning January 2010. Natural history topics include wintering birds, wildflowers, and insects. The presentations by noted local naturalists will be held on the campus of our watershed partner MiraCosta College, San Elijo Campus, 3333 Manchester Avenue, Cardiff, CA. The lectures are a fun way to learn about our environment, and there will be NO quiz afterwards!

8:30 am - 10:30 am beginning at Rios Ave. trailhead
During the first few months of the year, casual birders at the San
Elijo Lagoon have an opportunity see a much greater variety of birds
than can be found during the summer months. In particular, large
numbers of ducks, sandpipers, and other shorebirds show up at San Elijo
Lagoon each winter to take advantage of the mild climate and abundant
foraging opportunities. Andy Mauro will explore some interesting facts about
shorebird behavior, and take a look at the different birds we're likely
to encounter on a winter walk at the lagoon.
Watch for these other upcoming lectures and walks...

A New Phone System for the Office
Mr. Watson--come here--I want to see you.'... These immortal words uttered by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876 ushered in a telephony revolution that continues to amaze in new and exciting ways today. This past month, office staff and our many callers were amazed when our new telephone PBX system went live. Callers are now greeted by the helpful recorded voice of our Communications director, Geoffrey Smith, who offers to help them find the information they need at the push of a button, whether it be departmental information, specific staff person extensions, details of upcoming events, or contact information for the nature center or state beach campground. Every staff person now sports their own direct phone extension and personal voice mail box. Communication has improved! People are happy! Alexander Graham Bell would be proud. Call today, 760.436.3944. (Thanks to Phil Wells of Giantstep Communications for his care and attention to detail in making this 'gently used' system possible.)
