Thomas A. Crowell, Esq. and Sheafe B. Walker, Esq. took opposing sides on copyright and trademark infringement, while cartoonist Alan Norico looked on, at the Nov. 17th monthly event at Pratt Manhattan.
New York, New York: Any contractual or copyright negotiation requires some basic definitions of terms, and that is exactly what Thomas A. Crowel did on Wednesday, November 17th at the Opposing Sides to IP Legal Issues panel. Topics from trademark infringement, to fair use, works for hire, rights of publicity and definition of copyright law were covered by graphic example and with a legal explanation of each concept, in a powerpoint presentation that was peppered with questions from the audience. The excitment really began when, after this brief overview in intellectual property was over, Attorneys Crowell and Walker took opposing sides to various copyright ownership trademark and fair use arguments. Using the work of comic artist Alan Norico to graphically illustrate thier various points, Cowell argued for the creative while Walker argued for both the client and corporate entities. Crowell explained to creative illustrators how they need to aware of trademarks, copyrights and rights of publicity when creating thier original works. Crowell along with Walker pulled back the curtain to show you how lawyers debate the issues of copyright and trademark infringement and fair use for both sides. It was an informative evening. Thomas A. Crowell, Esq., is the founding partner of Saperstein & Crowell, LLP and author of the best-selling legal guide "The Pocket Lawyer for Filmmakers". |

Guild Members attend The New York City Subway Map – Form v. Function in the Public Realm, about considering how best to achieve both functionality and beauty.
From left to right, Advocacy Chair Lisa Shaftel, Legendary graphic designer Massimo Vignelli, NY Chapter VP, Craig Brown, Mary Mathieux, NY Chapter President, Mark Bennett and NY Chapter Adminstrator Ellen Stedfeld. Boston Chapter and National Advocacy Chair Lisa Shaftel traveled to New York city on Tuesday, December 7th, to join with members of the NY Chapter board who attended a lecture at the Museum of the City of New York about form and function and the designing of the New York Subway map. Massimo Vignelli’s 1972 New York City subway map, produced by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, was considered a design triumph — earning itself a place in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art — but it was criticized as confusing to passengers. A new version of the subway map was released earlier this year, re-raising the enduring dilemma: how best to achieve both functionality and beauty. What alternate versions of the map might be created to encourage ridership and appeal aesthetically? The presentation provided insight to both unusual aspects of the city and the issues that a map designer is faced with when trying to help passengers in navigating it.
