Surge of Interest in Economic Opportunity


In response to feedback in the All-Partner Survey, SV2 will be offering a Grant Round in a new area this year: Economic Opportunity & Employment. While SV2 has made smaller grants in this sector in the past, including during our pilot Lightning Grant Round in spring 2015, we're excited to focus a full Grant Round for the first time in this critical area of need.

Grantee Spotlight: Urban Debate League's Summer Institute

Silicon Valley Urban Debate League (SVUDL), the past program year's Education Grant Round winner, held their second annual Summer Debate Institute in July. SVUDL used part of their first year grant dollars to fund student transportation costs to the Institute, resulting in a record number of attendees - over 100, almost double last year’s number. Many SV2 Partners invested “Beyond-the-Dollars” volunteer time in the Summer Institute as well. See photos on SVUDL's blog here.

Welcome, Newest SV2 Partners

Deepak and Christina Kamra met in New York City then moved to Northern California where they have resided for almost 30 years. They have two children, Nicole (26) and Alec (25), both with technology careers in New York City. Deepak has been a General Partner with global venture capital firm Canaan Partners for over 25 years, focusing on investments in areas such as software, marketplaces and space. Christina grew up in Indiana, attended Purdue University, and pursued a career in publishing at McGraw-Hill and John Wiley in New York. She devotes most of her time to charitable pursuits.

Steve Tai has over 30 years of experience in creating market leading software products spanning successful startups, major corporations and a non-profit organization. Steve and his wife, Kin-Ching Wu, met at UC Berkeley graduate school and have lived in the Bay Area since graduation. They have two grown sons - Aaron currently works at a hedge fund in New York City, while Ryan recently relocated back to the Bay Area and is working for American Express. Steve and his wife enjoy traveling, hiking, fine dining and spending time with his large extended family who happens to live very close by.

The Essentials of Strategies for Problem Solving Philanthropy

The Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society’s Effective Philanthropy Lab ran a two-day workshop, The Essentials of Strategies for Problem Solving Philanthropy on April 18th and 19th with SV2. Based on the positive feedback, we are offering a shortened afternoon-long version on August 10th. We highly recommend this bite-sized workshop if you missed it in April.
