CUS01 Music Training Package Review
Hi there,
Thank you to everyone who attended a consultation meeting in either Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth or Canberra. I gained valuable feedback on the draft qualifications and units of competence which will be fed into final revisions being made in January.
In summary:
  • Music performance, music composition -  this area of the draft Training Package appears to meet needs and addresses issues raised in Phase One of the CUS01 review in 1995.
  • Music business
    • some RTOs have expressed concern at importing units from the BSB07 Training Package
    • still some gaps in content, particularly in the area of digital distribution of music.
  • Sound production: still some gaps in content if qualifications are to cover a range of occupations across live music, recording studios and screen sound (recording and post production).

Final draft qualifications and units

Final draft units and qualifications will be loaded onto the IBSA Review and Feedback Register by the end of January 2009.

The deadline for comment on final drafts is Friday 20 February 2009.

IBSA Review and Feedback Register

The IBSA Review and Feedback Register is the central point for providing feedback. There you will find all draft units written specifically for the CUS09 Music Training Package, as well as the draft qualifications.

It takes only a minute or so to organise yourself a login and password for the register - click here to go to the login page. Once you have logged in, select CUS01 Music Training Package (under the sub heading Review Training Packages under development). At the bottom of the CUS01 page you can download the latest versions of documents that map CUS01 qualifications and units to the proposed new ones. To view draft units, select the stream you're interested in or view all units. To provide feedback, simply follow the link to the feedback form. You can also view feedback from other people.

Units imported from BSB07

As you look through qualifications - particularly those in Music Business - you will notice that many units have been imported from the BSB07 Business Services Training Package. To avoid an excessive proliferation of units covering the same content, developers of Training Packages (TPs) are required to import units from other TPs wherever possible. However, this practice doesn't stop you from injecting a music industry focus to units covering generic skills such as marketing and business development.

"When contextualising units of competency RTOs may add to the range statement or the evidence guide. They must not:

  • remove the content of any of the elements and performance criteria
  • distort or narrow the competency outcomes and limit its use
  • diminish the breadth of application of the competency and reduce its portability."
(Source: Training Packages @ Work: Back to Basics, Edition 3 - click here to download a copy.)

For example, if you decide to use the imported unit 'BSBEBU501A Investigate and design ebusiness solutions' in your training program, you can add to the range statement for 'e-business models' examples of models that use music industry terminology. Similarly you can add specific examples of what 'business to consumer' means in the context of the music industry.

To view or download copies of individual units from BSB07, click here for the relevant page on the National Training Information Service (NTIS) website.

Units imported from other TPs

Units are also imported from:

  • CUF07 Screen and Media Training Package
    (units starting with 'CUF')
  • CUE03 Entertainment Training Package Version 3
    (units starting with 'CUE')
  • CUV03 Visual Arts, Craft and Design Training Package Version 3 (units starting with 'CUV').

Unfortunately you can't download individual units from the NTIS, but you can download PDF versions of each of the TPs at the following links:
