State Policy Update

State Commercial Forestry Program Withdrawal Fee Bill Tabled

On May 25, the House Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources Committee took testimony on HB 5681 (Rep. Darwin Booher, R-Evart), legislation that would allow land sold to a public body for public use to waive the fee required for withdrawal from the commercial forestry program. Heart of the Lakes advocated for passage of the bill in partnership with member Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy. Read More

State Oil and Gas Lease Auction Breaks Revenue Records
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment conducted an oil and gas lease auction of state-owned parcels that netted a record-breaking $178 million in bonus payments for the state, partly in response to recent news of a successful test well is Missaukee County on a formation known as the Utica Shale. When land conservancy board members Ruthann French (Cadillac Area Land Conservancy), Mary Sclawy (Six Rivers Regional Land Conservancy), Patricia VanPelt (Keweenaw Land Trust) and Christine Williams (Keweenaw Land Trust) decided to get together as part of the Advancing Conservancy Excellence (ACE) Peer-to-Peer program, they extended an invitation across the state, resulting in the first ever statewide networking event explicitly for board members of Michigan land conservancies. Project Highlight of the Month

The Little Forks Conservancy recently received a $75,000 grant from the Charles J. Strosacker Foundation to aid in the purchase of 419 acres along the Tittabawasee River, part of a $1.5 million campaign to purchase undeveloped land along two miles of the River in Midland County. Read More
