Paragon System Goes to Construction

Our first Paragon Compost System™ is going to construction this month and you are invited to track our progress. We will be updating our Blog as we progress through each step of construction. Beginning with "the pile out behind the barn", you will see pictures of site preparation, installation of the aeration system, forms placed for the concrete walls, construction of the super-structure (provided by Barn Pros), and the completed system.

We will discuss each step of the construction process, including the cost of construction (materials and labor). Once completed, we will contniue with system start-up and ultimately show you the laboratory results for the finished compost product. This will be a real time "Seeing is Believing Tour" and will help you envision a compost system of your very own.

Spring is the Ideal Time to Get Started!

Your mission - should you choose to accept it - is to visit your manure pile, take a long hard look at it, and ask yourself "do I really want to go through another winter like this?"

If you own horses and you have problems with flies, mud, offensive odors, and manure water draining off into a nearby creek, you owe it to yourself to make a change - a change that will simplify your daily chores, improve your horse's health, and reduce adverse impacts to the environment. In other words, if you own horses, improving your manure management system should be you're #1 Priority and the best time to get started is Right Now!

Yes, it requires an investment of time and money to get set up with your own compost system, but your investment will pay dividends for years to come. And next winter, when you deliver the manure to your covered O2Compost system, you will say to yourself, "That's the smartest thing I've done in a long, long time".

Compost and Clean Water

Part 1
Without clean water the world as we know it would not exist.  This is not hyperbole, this is a fact.   Despite all of our differences, one thing that we as human beings all have in common is that we need water to survive.  We all know this, and yet many of us take clean water for granted – until it’s no longer available.  What would you do if you turned on the faucet for your morning shower and nothing came out? How would your life be different if you had to haul water on your back, five gallons at a time, six hours a day, just as an estimated 1.8 billion women do throughout Africa, Asia, and the Middle East?

The April issue of National Geographic Magazine is devoted to the topic of Water.  Please buy a copy, read it cover to cover, and then pass it along to a friend and ask them to do the same.  This is a critical topic and it needs to be on the forefront of any discussion concerning sustainability and the future of the human race.

Despite the wide range of topics that are presented in this magazine, one thing that is not covered in any detail is the relationship between clean water and topsoil - more specifically the organic component of topsoil.  This is the first in a series of newsletter articles in which we will discuss the interrelationship between compost and clean water.  The following are topics that I will cover in future articles:

  • Composting
  • Infiltration and Erosion Control
  • Water Retention
  • Water Purification
  • Highly Impacted Water Resources
  • "Soils for Salmon" and Low Impact Development
  • Conservation and On-Site Water Management

This series of articles is intended to be a conversation. With that in mind, we welcome all of your comments and suggestions for future articles.
