The Power of our School Wide Program
Mira Vista_Sw WAP_2nd Grade_Ms. KingCan you imagine getting to touch bay organisms while learning science? Would you think a science class could take place at the rocky shore of Alameda’s Crab Cove? Can you picture anything more fun than spending a day at the ocean? That is just what our students and teachers do at Mira Vista School as part of the KIDS for the BAY School Wide Watershed Action Program. This is an exciting opportunity for the school community to learn about the entire watershed, from storm drains in the school neighborhood to the local creek, the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. We make science fun and accessible for students of diverse backgrounds and foster environmental stewardship and activism.

glorietta.jpg 2Empowering Girl Scientists

Girls love science, especially in a confidence-building environment with excellent role models! That is why KIDS for the BAY has partnered with women scientists who are leaders in their fields to offer a week of amazing hands-on activities, outdoor fun and team building in an all-girls science camp experience.
The camp includes kayaking on the bay, exploring different habitats and studying their organisms, developing scientific skills by testing water quality, learning about plant and animal adaptations and much, much more. Camp runs from Monday, July 28 to Friday, August 1st. There are still a few spots available, but this camp is filling up fast! Visit our website and register for this amazing camp!

Be an Environmentalist:
Water
 Conservation CoronadoAlvarado Park
KIDS for the BAY students are always surprised to learn that even though over 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, less than 1% of this water is fresh water accessible for human consumption.
This water is found in lakes, rivers, creeks and underground reservoirs.
Rain and snowfall renews the supply of fresh water and makes it available to us.
This year California is experiencing a severe drought and water conservation efforts have become even more vital.

“Thank you for teaching the class about water. I didn’t care about water before, and now I do. It helped me understand how important it is to conserve water and be careful of what we throw away.”
Jayita, Fifth Grade Student, Hirsch Elementary School, Fremont

“It is important to save fresh water because every living thing needs fresh water to live.”
Sahithi Matta, Fourth Grade Student, Brier Elementary School, Fremont
