President's Message

Hello LW Alumni!  We have 24 enthusiastic people about to embark on their journey into the world of Leadership Worthington.  We hope our 20th class will be the best ever but we know that is a tall order looking back at all the success we have had during the past two decades.  I look forward to working with the new class.  I also hope the best and the brightest from the last 20 years will see where they can help LW grow to make our 20th anniversary year one to remember!  Keep an eye out for ways to connect, serve and support our great organization during the class year of 2009-10 as well as into our next 20 years.  And thank you for all the support with which we would not have lasted this long to begin with.  Remember, finding the leader within you is a lifelong journey.  Peace.

Guest Leader's Message
Each month, Leadership Worthington will provide you with a new Leadership perspective from a leader in our community.

This month's guest writer is Cassady Watson.  Cassady shares her acceptance speech as the winner of the Leadership For a Lifetime Award. Cassady attends Granby Elementary School.

I want to start out by giving a huge thank you to the people who chose me as the LFLT winner for the elementary grades.  It is a tremendous honor to be one of the four people chosen this year.   To me, if you want to be a good leader, you need to have the seven virtues.  The seven virtues are taught at my school.  They are perseverance, generosity, responsibility, respect, honesty, compassion, and self-discipline.  One of my favorite virtues is perseverance because when you are a leader you can never give up. If you think something’s not right, you need to keep working on it until you fix the problem.  People who are leaders aren’t necessarily in charge but they are there to help and guide you.  My teacher nominated me because she thinks I show leadership qualities at school, at home, and in the community.  I have many people to thank for helping me develop those qualities. One of those people is my nominator, Miss Rachel Dawson.  Miss Dawson is a fourth grade teacher at Granby Elementary.  She is so cool and nice and she is an AI fan like me.  Miss Dawson also comes up with fun incentives to make school more fun.  Many other teachers have influenced me:  Mrs. Schlarb, Mrs. Dixon, Mrs. McPheron, Mrs. Stukey, Mrs. Ruffing, Mr. Frederick, Mr. Korn, Mr. Hollinger, Mrs. Beyer, Mr. Armstrong, Mrs. Mayberry, Mrs. Ritter, Mrs. Jewett, and Mrs. Olney have all given me opportunities to show leadership in and out of the classroom.  There are two more teachers who mean a lot to me.  One teacher is Miss Tina Swearengin.  Tina is also a teacher at Granby, but she teaches sixth grade.  The other teacher is Miss Lynn Murphy.  Lynn is a second grade teacher at Worthington Park.  Tina and Lynn have known me my whole life.  Tina and Lynn are like second and third moms to me.  I think this because Tina almost cried when she found out I won the Leadership Worthington award.  Lynn said something like, “Wow, Cassady!  That is so cool.  I am so proud of you.”  Tina and Lynn have taught me how to be a leader by using the virtues themselves.  Once when we were at the Bluejackets game, Lynn tried to get money and the machine stole Lynn’s bank card.  Instead of freaking out, they took charge and tried to fix the problem.  My friends also influence me.  When my friends heard the news, they didn’t say, I want to win or How come Miss Dawson nominated you and not me.  They said wow Cassady we are all proud of you and what a big honor Cassady.  They definitely showed all the virtues tied in together. My family, though, definitely influences me the most.  They have been a huge impact on my leadership skills.  My family is behind me 100%.  My parents show leadership skills by them raising seven kids.  They never give up.  They show all the virtues, but especially perseverance.  I show leadership with my brothers and sisters by watching them and helping them with their homework.  Last but not least, my grandparents show me how to be a leader.  My grandpa and my pop are veterans of the Vietnam War.  My grannie is a retired teacher and she showed leadership by teaching all those kids.  My grandma did a lot of volunteer work while my dad was a kid.  All of my grandparents show leadership by helping my parents with my siblings and me.

All of these people have influenced me and helped me to be a better leader.  Thanks again for honoring me with this award.

LW Alumns Highlights
Leadership Worthington's tag phrase is Discover Your Potential.  Here's an update of those doing just that.

John Butterfield, Class of 1989-90

John Butterfield was one of the many "founders" of Leadership Worthington back in 1989-90.  Thanks to John and so many others who had a wonderful "vision" , the Leadership Worthington programs are now celebrating 20 years of helping to develop leaders in our own community.

One of the myriad of jobs and opportunities John has embraced  over the years has been on the Worthington City Council.  We wish him much success as he moves on from that position into another field of interest.  No moss is growing under his feet.

Thank you John for supporting Leadership Worthington over all these years and beyond.

R. Leland Evans, Class of 1992

Community Dialogue:
Critical Thought for your Health:

A systemic perspective on health from a solution oriented perspective facilitated by Dr. Ted Sun (recently seen on NBC 4) and Dr. Pam Popper.

While the media and the medical industry uses fear to obtain compliance, the systemic impacts are far reaching. When you allow yourself to be a victim in this system, you pay not with your wallet, but also psychologically and intellectually. Using principles from systems thinking and solution oriented decision making, Drs. Sun & Popper will lead a dialogue on the systemic perspective of health. While this is a contextual conversation creating awareness, it may cover key content topics in today’s health conscious world.

Leadership Moments
"Ah-has", tried and true tips to help individuals lead and guide with a new insight to administer, direct, share and comment.

The Magic Moment

If we do not know how the events of the day will unfold, if we cannot see into the future, when does leadership happen?

Answer:  It happens at the Magic Moment.

A Magic Moment is any time we receive information and face a choice - a choice in determining what actions we will take and what we will say.

In working with business people around the world, we have conducted research which shows that just over half of us will say or do something destructive when faced with a stressful situation.  At that critical point, in that "Magic Moment" when people discover that things have not gone the way we wanted them to, their words and body language lash out with harmful messages.

Another large group of people do nothing.  They simply ignore the situation.

These two types of leaders miss the most important decisions that take place during a day.  When missed, these Magic Moments, which number in the thousands, breed and feed office elephants.  But other people seize such Magic Moments and use them in their favor.  Life happens (Read: Competition happens, market conditions happen, personnel and supplier issues happen, and so forth).  These leaders recognize an opportunity and leverage the moment to deliver results now - and guarantee greater results in the future (p. 114-115, Vannoy and Ross, 2008).

Take another step to learn leadership within the State of Ohio
Leadership Ohio is a statewide educational/experiential program that is designed to provide leaders from diverse geographic areas and entities around the state with the opportunity to examine issues from a statewide perspective.  Sound interesting??  Read more!

A major expectation of programmatic outcomes is that issues and experiences addressed will remain at the forefront of each leader’s consciousness, as they make decisions. Leaders who graduate from the program are better equipped to serve their communities and Ohio.  Participants in Leadership Ohio are individuals throughout the state who are living the leadership experience in an existing public or private sector of the state, with room to grow.  Local leadership program graduates from around the state have moved on  to enroll in the April-November program.  As graduates and friends of Leadership Worthington, please take the opportunity to look into this program.  Their mission is to identify, educate, communicate, inspire and engage Ohio’s current and emerging leaders for the well being of the people of Ohio. The application form and prospectus can be found at www.leadershipohio.org
