Guest Leader's Message
Each month, Leadership Worthington will provide you with a new Leadership perspective from a leader in our community.
This month's guest writer is Darnell Perkins, President of The Rotary Club of Dublin-Worthington.
Thank You Leadership Worthington
The Rotary Family Picnic is part of our community’s annual celebration of the Fourth of July, that begins festively in the evening on the grounds of Thomas Worthington High School with a picnic, food, music and children games, and ends at night with a spectacular display of fireworks sponsored by the City of Worthington. This event, in only its second year as a Rotary Club of Dublin-Worthington sponsored event, is quickly becoming a major fundraiser for our club. The money raised by selling food during picnic and by offering corporate sponsorships for the event helps to provide funds for the following Rotary causes:
· To award annual scholarships to seniors who live within the Worthington and Dublin School Districts
· To purchase clean water filters to provide safe household water treatment, sanitation and hygiene to those less fortunate in the Dominican Republic
· To support the efforts of the Worthington Food Taskforce to establish a new food pantry in Worthington
· To purchase dictionaries for third grade students in Southeastern Ohio
· To provide gifts and food for needy families at Christmas.
Thank you Leadership Worthington.
The Worthington Family Picnic, the predecessor to the Rotary Family Picnic, was an idea conceived, developed, and implemented in 2005 as a class project by the Leadership Worthington team of Jeff Appel, Antonio Benton, Steve Butcher, Tony Mormile, Darian Parsons, and George Sontag. After a very successful inaugural year Jeff Appel and Antonio Benton continued to run the picnic as a Leadership Worthington sponsored event for two more years. In 2008 the Rotary Club of Worthington was brought in to be the food vendor for the picnic and provide volunteers to help Jeff and Antonio with logistics. In 2009 the picnic became a fully sponsored Rotary Club of Worthington event and was renamed The Rotary Family Picnic.
Thank you Leadership Worthington, class of 2005, the Worthington Family Picnic team, and a special thank to Jeff Appel and Antoino Benton .
Although the day was mostly cloudy with intermittent showers, the 2009 picnic was highly successful. Music for all to enjoy was provided DJ Robbie McDowell, giant inflatable games for children from Super Games were available, and every participant seemed to enjoy the grilled brats, hot dogs, burgers, ice cream, and other good food served up by Rotary. Much needed monetary support was provided from the following major sponsors: Cam Taylor Realtors, Appel and Hellstedt, LLP, Thomas E Hall & Heather Hall Appel, DDS, GFS Market Place, Park National Bank, MidAmerican Mortgage Solutions, Schoedinger Funeral Services, Buckeye Heating & Cooling, Northwest Oral and Facial Surgery, Telhio Credit Union, The City of Worthington, Timothy E. Moats, DDS, LLC, Midwest Graphics, The Greater Worthington Area Real Estate Association, and MedVet. The Rotary Club of Worthington owes a big thanks to all those who helped to make this years event a success one and we look forward to a bigger and better event as the years progress.
Thank you Leadership Worthington for our Rotary Family Picnic.
Darnell Perkins, President
The Rotary Club of Dublin-Worthington

Leading and Managing in the Economic Crisis: Avoiding sleep walkers on your teams and engaging them authentically.
When: 7 PM, September 8th
Where: Worthington Education Center
Description: In the midst of the economic crisis, many organizations are tightening their belts and dictating reduced budgets on teams. While such management practices are typical of tough times, they may greatly limit innovation that gets organizations out of these times. Sleep walkers in organizations simply do what’s necessary which minimizes innovation. Developing a strategic sense about when to lead and when to manage helps leaders create the synergy necessary to thrive in these times.

Leadership Moments
"Ah-has", tried and true tips to help individuals lead and guide with a new insight to administer, direct, share and comment.
Who Will Succeed in this Climate?
People with big ambition will not fare well in this climate.
Ambition interferes with the need to be patient and persevering.
Ambition makes you contrive results.
To think that small efforts will not make a difference is arrogance.
On the other hand, for people with big determination, this climate is for you!
No matter how bleak, you won’t sit back and wait. Your determination will propel you forward in small steps.
Even though this is not a time to launch big programs, or ask for big donations and big orders, it is a GREAT time to plant small seeds.
One seed contains the potential of 10,000 forests.
