"Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise."

Bring Your Pets to Church

Do we bless animals or do they bless us? On October 4th we will celebrate the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi with a blessing of the animals. This promises to be a joyful and entertaining day. We will bring our pets right into the service and the sermon time will be devoted to the blessing ceremony.

Children Ringing.jpgThe St. Dunstan’s Children’s Choir will sing a special song. This will be our first chance to see and hear this group. We hope that more children from our Sunday School will join the Children’s Choir when they see how much fun it is. As you can see, even the rehearsals are great fun!

Children Singing.jpgOn the feast of St. Francis we bless animals who have already blessed us. Pets give us the chance to love unreservedly. We can give our love to a dog or cat or other critter without worrying about whether that love will be returned. That’s great practice. That’s exactly how God loves us: God loves us without worrying about whether we will love God back. We struggle to love one another in this gracious and generous way. We fear rejection, so we hold our love back, protecting our heart from disappointment. Animals have no such reservations, and when we love our pets, neither do we.

Yours in Christ,

The Rev, David Marshall

A message from Bishop Rickel regarding the HINI Virus

To the People of God in the Diocese of Olympia,

By now you have heard that there is an expectation of a reemergence of the Swine Flu in the next weeks and months.  College campuses are already seeing cases.  Washington State University has five cases currently.  It is difficult to know how to prepare for this, but there are certainly some good guidelines emerging to help us.

Looking Ahead to this Sunday's Readings

In all three of our readings this coming Sunday, from Numbers, James and Mark, God is calling people to spiritual leadership. God is always doing that. God calls us to set our will, our heart and our love on the well being of others. Reach beyond our own needs to the needs and concerns of others.

Parish Events and Announcements

Sunday: Holy Eucharist, 8:00 AM, Henry Chapel & 9:30 AM, St. Dunstan's Church

Wednesday: Holy Eucharist, 10:00 AM, St. Dunstan's.

Families With Children. At the 9:30 service we offer Sunday School for kindergarten through middle school children. We also offer nursery care for babies and toddlers not yet ready for Sunday School. Our teachers are dedicated to the safety and Christian education of your children using a lectionary based curriculum called Seasons of the Spirit. Children come back to the service for communion. Children are always welcome in the service.

Nursery Volunteers needed.  We are very blessed to have a new nursery attendant, Kate Marshall. She is taking the position once held by MeiLing Morrison-Beals.  The Diocese now requires two people to be in the rooms where there are children, and this includes the nursery.  Will you please consider volunteering for this important opportunity?  It is for Sunday's during the service and if we get enough volunteers, you won't be called on often.  Teenagers might also want to consider doing this as it will count toward your service credit at school, and Ann-Patrice Riccardo will sign off on that for you.

Eucharistic Visitors: We are expanding our Eucharistic Visitors program to ensure that all our members who cannot make it to church have the opportunity to receive communion. We welcome the participation of everyone, and are especially looking for couples who would like to participate together. If you wish to be a part of this effort as Eucharistic Visitors, please let Deacon Jerry know. There will be training presented by diocesan staff on two Saturdays in October.

God in Real Life. Father David is now offering a new class on Wednesdays from 11:00 AM until noon. We use a variety of resources, including a wonderful video series by Rob Bell, to explore the questions that we face as we attempt to live as followers of Jesus. Each session begins with a short teaching or presentation to introduce a topic and then we explore that topic as a group.

St. Dunstan’s Annual School Supply Drive for the children of New Beginnings ends this Sunday. You can still participate by delivering an item to the collection box in the narthex this Sunday or by making a cash donation: checks should be marked “School Supplies.” Thanks to everybody who supported this valuable project.

The Parish Choir is inviting new members to sing with us as we begin the new season. There are openings in all sections. Please consider joining us, and pass the word to others. It is not necessary to be a member of St. Dunstan’s. Speak with Marion at coffee hour or call (206-449-5537) about our exciting plans for the year.

Please send announcements to office@sdchp.org or call the office by Tuesday evening to have them included in the bulletin for the following Sunday. If you would like to make an announcement during the service, please let Father David know prior to the start of the service.
