Dear friends,
We are writing to appeal for your support in response to cyclone Haruna which hit the Velondriake area, where Blue Ventures works, as a powerful category 2 storm on Friday 22nd February.
Haruna is the biggest cyclone to hit the south west coast of Madagascar in more than 35 years, and severe flooding is blocking the roads connecting Andavadoaka to Toliara (200km to the south) and Morombe (50km to the north).
All of our partner communities in Velondriake are struggling to access clean water following the cyclone, with many people suffering from diarrhoea. Wells have been submerged under floodwater or contaminated with runoff that has mixed with rubbish and human waste. Malaria is also high risk because standing water is providing ideal breeding grounds for mosquitos, and people who are sleeping out in the open since their homes have been destroyed are particularly vulnerable.
In response, our community health team in Andavadoaka has quickly mobilised to disseminate vital health information and distribute our available stocks of water purifying solution, diarrhoea treatment kits and insecticide-treated mosquito nets to priority groups including pregnant women and infants.
However, there is tremendous demand for these limited resources from affected populations, and our stocks have now run out. Velondriake is extremely isolated and these remote communities have no way of accessing these life-saving supplies in the short-term without our assistance.
We are therefore urgently trying to raise £4,000 this week in order to purchase, transport and distribute more stocks of water purifying solution, diarrhoea treatment kits and insecticide-treated mosquito nets to 40 communities in and around Velondriake, home to more than 15,000 people.

Please give what you can to this special appeal. Any donation, large or small, will make a great difference to supporting our efforts.
Giving just £10 would have a huge impact by allowing us to buy enough bottles of water purifying solution to enable 400 families to make their drinking water safe for at least a month.
We hope that you are able to join with us in responding to the pressing health needs of our partner communities in south west Madagascar following cyclone Haruna.
Please spread the word and forward this message to anyone else who may like to support this special appeal. The link to our donations page is http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/cyclone-haruna-response.
Many thanks,
Vik, Laura, Caroline and the rest of Blue Ventures team
