This year, as part of our 30th anniversary celebrations, we want to begin recognizing you, our students, for the amazing things that you have done during your exchange program!

Each month, we will feature a "Stellar Student of the Month" to recognize one exchange student who has gone above and beyond as a student, a family member, an athlete, or a member of the community. Have you won any awards? Taken any leadership roles? Won a science competition? Volunteered in your community? Done something special for your host family or community? We're talking about you!

Now accepting nominations! Host families, coordinators, and friends, if you would like to nominate an NWSE exchange student who has been an amazing person or undergone an amazing transformation during their exchange, please fill out the online Stellar Student of the Month Nomination Form.

Nominations will close at midnight on the first Friday of each month.

Meet Our Newest Staff Members!
We are excited to introduce you to our two newest staff members in the Seattle office! Meet Hope Hudson, our new Program Assistant, and Kelsey Walsh, our new Program Coordinator. They can't wait to get to know you and support you during your exchange adventures!
Hope Hudson was born and raised in Homer, Alaska, a small fishing town 200 miles south of Anchorage. She recently graduated from Linfield College with a B.A in Communication Arts and minors in Spanish and Music. During her studies, Hope spent a semester abroad at Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador, where she really developed her passion for cultural exchange and international programs. During high school, Hope traveled to Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic on a high school choir tour. As a university student, she also spent a month studying abroad in Spain and Morocco, and recently spent a month traveling in Thailand, Cambodia, and Singapore.
Kelsey Walsh, originally from Bellingham, Washington, earned her B.A. in Sociology with a minor in Spanish at the University of Washington. She is currently completing her M.A. in International Education at SIT Graduate Institute. During high school, Kelsey participated in a Spanish immersion program in Cuernavca, Mexico. In college, she studied for a semester at the University of Belgrano in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After graduating, she did a Hospitality Management Internship in Galicia and Malaga in Spain, and recently volunteered in Huancayo, Peru, tutoring students at an after-school program. She completed her TESOL certification, while teaching English at a community school in rural Costa Rica.
Refer a Host Family

Help us give the gift of exchange to deserving students in the 2018-19 school year! We've already begun looking for great host families for our students arriving next fall. If you know of a great family who could provide a loving home to one of our exchange students, please send them our way! We will provide a $175 airline gift certificate for an airline of your choice for referring a family that hosts one of our students.

Write to us at, include "Host Family Referral" in the subject line, and we'll do the rest. Interested hosts can also visit our website for more detailed information.

Holidays and Cultural Events

The Spring Equinox (Mar. 20) signals the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Many cultures celebrate spring festivals and holidays, such as Easter and Passover, on or around this day. Another such holiday is Nowruz, which marks the beginning of the new year in Iran.

Passover (sundown Mar. 30 to sundown Apr. 7) is a Jewish holiday celebrating the liberation of Jewish people from slavery in ancient Egypt under the leadership of Moses. Families usually celebrate the first night of this weeklong festival with a special dinner called a seder.

Easter (Apr. 1) is a Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus. Many Americans also celebrate Easter as a secular holiday to mark the arrival of spring. A common Easter tradition is to decorate eggs, which the "Easter bunny" then hides for children to find.

April Fools' Day (Apr. 1) is a playful holiday during which it is common to play tricks on people, and then shout "April Fools!" once the other person becomes aware of the trick. Watch out for your prankster friends on this day!
