Earlier this month, NWSE staff and coordinators from across the U.S. (and Germany!) traveled to Seattle to meet and discuss implementing improvements in our programs for our students, host families, schools, and families back home.

This is what we believe the NWSE program is all about:

What comes to YOUR mind when you think of NWSE? Let us know - we want to hear from you! Send your keywords to nwse@nwse.com!

Here are a few more photos of our hardworking team!

Halloween Pumpkin Photo Contest

It's October, and that means it's time for the annual NWSE Halloween pumpkin photo contest! Carve a cool design into a pumpkin, take a photo, and send your photo to us by November 1 (the day after Halloween). The pumpkin must be designed and carved by you, the exchange student, and the photo must include you, preferably in a Halloween costume.

Visit our contest page for complete contest rules.

REMINDER: Send Us Your Flight Info

Fall Semester students: If you have not done so already, please remember to send your return flight information to your Program Coordinator in Seattle. Thank you!

Seattle Halloween Pumpkin Patch Tour
This past weekend, the NWSE Seattle staff celebrated the start of the 2017 Halloween season by hosting an event for our students and host families near Seattle at a pumpkin farm. Enjoy some of these photos from our trip!

Q: I've been feeling homesick lately. Is there anyone out there who can help me?

A: Yes, there are several people you can talk to! Your host family, friends, teachers, and school counselors are the people you see almost every day, and they can be of great help when you need it most. But don't forget that you can always talk to your NWSE Area Coordinator. Contact him or her if you ever have a problem or concern - and you can also reach out to your Program Coordinator at the NWSE Seattle office.

Refer a Host Family

Help us give the gift of exchange to deserving students in the 2018-19 school year! We've already begun looking for great host families for our students arriving next fall. If you know of a great family who could provide a loving home to one of our exchange students, please send them our way! We will provide a $175 airline gift certificate for an airline of your choice for referring a family that hosts one of our students.

Write to us at host@nwse.com, include "Host Family Referral" in the subject line, and we'll do the rest. Interested hosts can also visit our website for more detailed information.

Unfortunately, regulations prohibit compensating a host family for referring itself.

We look forward to receiving your referrals very soon!

Meet Your NWSE Staff!
Each month, you will have the opportunity to read about two of the hardworking and dedicated members of the NWSE staff. Meet Daniela and Bryn!

Daniela Palomino is a Program Coordinator at the NWSE Seattle office. Daniela was born in Peru and moved to the U.S. ten years ago. She worked for the last five and a half years with Spanish, Portuguese, and English language learners as a language educator and tutor. She is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese and received a B.A. in Political Science and International Studies from the University of Washington. Daniela has experienced living and studying in different cultural environments, and she is excited to coordinate cultural exchanges for our students and share her passion for these unforgettable and rewarding international experiences. She moved to Alabama from Peru when she was 13 years old and lived in Brazil for six months in 2015.

Bryn Cooper is the Program Assistant at the NWSE Seattle office. She assists with daily program operations and also manages NWSE's social media accounts. Bryn has spent most of her life in Seattle and earned a B.S. in Psychology with a Minor in Spanish from the University of Washington. Before graduating, she studied abroad in Cadiz, Spain for a semester and lived with a host family. Bryn enjoys working for NWSE because it combines her passion for traveling and learning about other cultures with helping others realize their opportunity to expand their horizons.
Upcoming Events and Holidays

Daylight Saving Time Ends (Nov. 5). Except in Arizona and Hawaii, which do not observe Daylight Saving Time, clocks will be turned back by one hour at 2 a.m. Clocks will move forward again on March 11, 2018.

Veterans Day (Nov. 11, observed Nov. 10) is a national holiday to honor veterans of the U.S. military. It originated as Armistice Day to mark the anniversary of the end of World War I, but it was renamed in 1954 to honor all veterans.

Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 23) celebrates blessings from the past year. Its traditions are based on a feast shared between early New England settlers and the Native Americans who helped them. Families typically celebrate with a feast of turkey, bread stuffing, potatoes, cranberries, and pumpkin pie.

We always welcome your program questions and suggestions. Please email us at nwse@nwse.com or call our office at 206 527 0917. Questions we include in our newsletter will be published anonymously.

Happy Halloween from the NWSE staff!
