Appellation America's Best of Appellation evaluation
Russian River Valley AVA
APPELLATION AMERICA is a major web based wine publication (100,000 visitors per month) covering the North American wine industry. In 2008 they launched their Best-of-Appellation(tm) program, an evaluation - not a competition - focused on defining the unique regional characteristics of the region's vineyards and how they are expressed in a finished wine. Russian River Valley AVA is the perennial third most viewed appellation in their index of the 300+ AVA in the United States. So the time for a Russian River Valley spotlight is now.
If a significant number of wines are submitted there is significant editorial exposure in this intra-AVA evaluation. Generally this requires 60 wine submissions to get a proper perspective of the appellation traits, enabling a set of feature articles beyond the evaluation story itself. All release as a package presented on the site's portal page for considerable time. The evaluation program is headed by Clark Smith, a nationally respected enologist, who brings in trained enological tasting panels that objectively utilize processes to define regional character. Wineries can get more information of the wine submission process at http://wine.appellationamerica.com/about-the-best-of-appellation.aspx

Our first member seminar for 2009 took place on April 23rd. Presentations by Wilbur Ellis on the apple moth, Dan Gudgel from the US Weather Service outlined reports and forecast available through their website and Solar Works shared the advantages of installing commercial solar systems. About 50 members enjoyed these presentations and great Dutton Ranch style barbeque and hospitality! Thank you to the Dutton family for hosting the event.
