Coleman Advocates is seeking a Youth Organizer!

Coleman Advocates is seeking an organizer dedicated to building the power of young people of color and to building a movement for racial and economic justice in San Francisco.  We are looking for a new full-time organizer to work with our youth organizing project, YMAC (Youth Making A Change).

Start Date: February 1st, 2012 

Location: 459 Vienna Street, San Francisco, CA  94112

Primary responsibilities:
  • Recruit and retain a membership base of young people at target high schools.
  • Build the leadership and skills of youth members and leaders through workshops, one-on-ones, and campaign activities.
  • Build a youth-led movement for education equity/quality public schools for all.
  • Support youth leadership in citywide Coleman campaigns, including annual electoral organizing and city budget advocacy.
  • Specific organizing roles include: identifying youth leaders, conducting weekly one on ones, phone banking, supporting youth leaders to run weekly youth membership and youth leader meetings, providing leadership development workshops (organizing skills, personal development, and political education), supporting youth in shaping school-site campaign plans, supporting youth leaders to take action, meet with public officials, etc.
  • At times this job will require long hours, including working early mornings, late nights and weekends.

Primary qualification - we are seeking experienced organizers and youth workers:
  • A minimum of 2 years experience as a youth organizer in a membership organization.
  • Or these alternatives:  1) a combination of community organizing & youth development/leadership experience; 2) a combination of youth development and progressive/social justice activism experience.
  • At least 1 year of experience as a youth worker supporting young people of color's leadership -- either as staff or as a highly responsible volunteer. Ideally, experience specifically with low-income and working class Black and Latino young people.
 
Other qualifications:
  • Energetic, outgoing, and able to easily approach youth and adults alike to build relationships
  • A strong desire to build the leadership of young people of color in SF public schools, especially in the Southeast
  • Demonstrated respect for the culture and leadership of young people
  • A commitment to improving the lives of poor and working class families of color, and to racial and economic justice
  • Able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Self motivated, with a demonstrated record of successfully achieving goals and being accountable to results
  • Well organized
  • Ability to attend night and weekend activities as needed
  • A current Driver’s license

Preferred (but not required) skills, qualities and experience:
  •  Bi-lingual (Spanish)
  • Knowledge of education policy/school reform issues from a racial justice perspective
  • Owns/has access to a car
  • Is from or has deep knowledge of San Francisco
