Shaping Up with Girls on the Run

Shape Magazine staffers laced up their running shoes and spent an afternoon volunteering as running buddies and coaches.  Pick up a copy of the October 2009 edition of Shape.

Safety First

A Girls on the Run® of Atlanta coach was hit by a car while out for her morning run.  She was not carrying ID and was a Jane Doe patient for more than a day.  She remains in critical care two weeks later.  Please run on the defensive!  The fall time changes, darker streets, tired and distracted drivers all make for dangerous conditions on our busy Atlanta streets. Please check out our blog for running safety tips. Thank you to Phidippides and the Atlanta Track Club for providing shoe ID tags and safety tip cards for all our coaches.  Please keep our coach and her family in your thoughts!

SoleMates Kicks Off the 2009 Season

Despite all the recent rain, our group of dedicated SoleMates runners have been running and training for upcoming events.  To join SoleMates, the adult charity running leg of Girls on the Run® (GOTR). SoleMates is a group of male and female athletes who pursue individual goals, such as running a 5K or marathon, to raise money for local Girls on the Run® councils. As an Atlanta SoleMates team member, you can make a difference in the lives of metro-Atlanta girls by sponsoring a girl's participation in the program. Last year's team raised enough money to fund 58 full-scholarships.

A Step in the Right Direction

The Lake forest ES Girls on the Run® team had a surprise visit from New Balance Rep., Matt Booth and Susan Jones of Phidippides who partnered to bring the shoe store to the girls.  New Balance and Phidippides fitted and distributed free New Blanace running shoes to all sixteen girls.

Support Our Running Store Partners

Phidippides and WestStride stores are wonderful resources for runners in Atlanta and strong supporters of the many Girls on the Run®  programs throughout the year.  You can support them by checking out the many events at their stores and to think of them the next time you are shopping for running gear.  Make sure to ask about the discounts for Girls on the Run® participants and volunteers! read more
