The Lung Source

e-newsletter

Hello Tracy,

Yikes! We're sorry! We hope you can forgive us. Typos happen. (Thanks to Simon for pointing it out.)

In our recent newsletter, we had a typo. We accidentally forgot a ZERO! We wrote that approximately over 3000 nonsmokers die from lung cancer each year, but actually that number is closer to 30,000!

Let us explain: According to NCI (National Cancer Institute) approximately 219,000 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009. According to American Cancer Society and other publications, approximately 10-20% of those diagnosed are nonsmokers. If we look at the median of 15% that would be 32,850. With a 5-year survival rate of 15% overall for lung cancer, that would be 27,922 nonsmoker deaths expected from lung cancer in 2009.

p.s. We don't normally send 2 newsletters in one day, but we didn't want you to be spreading the wrong information. We promise to triple check our facts in the future.

Sincerely,
The Beverly Fund Team
