Press Conference with President Nasheed of the Maldives & his Lawyers Jared Genser, Amal Clooney and Ben Emmerson
London, January 21, 2016 – In his first public comments since leaving jail in the Maldives, former President Mohamed Nasheed will brief journalists at a news conference flanked by his international legal counsel, Jared Genser of Freedom Now, Amal Clooney of Doughty St Chambers and Ben Emmerson QC of Matrix Chambers.
President Nasheed is the first democratically-elected leader of his country and a renowned champion for human rights and climate justice. In March 2015, he was sentenced to 13 years' imprisonment in the Maldives by the authoritarian regime of Abdulla Yameen, the half-brother of a former dictator. The United Nations ruled President Nasheed’s detention as “arbitrary” and ordered his immediate release. But the Yameen regime refuses to comply with the UN ruling.
Last weekend, following intense diplomatic pressure and under the looming threat of international sanctions, the regime allowed President Nasheed to leave the Maldives and travel to the United Kingdom, where he will undergo medical treatment.
In this press conference, President Nasheed and his lawyers will assess the political situation in the Maldives and highlight the human rights abuses still ongoing in a country most people associate with tropical paradise.
Speakers: President Mohamed Nasheed; Jared Genser of Freedom Now, Amal Clooney of Doughty Street Chambers and Ben Emmerson of Matrix Chambers, counsel to President Nasheed.
Date and Time: Monday 25th January, 13.00-14.30
Venue: 54 Doughty Street, London WC1N 2LS
