 RAWHIDE ROLLER RACING

rawhide.jpg

Rawhide Roller Racing made its Australian debut at the Mont 24 Hour Race and it proved to be a big hit with competitors and spectators alike. 33 competitors sprinted their hearts out for the total entry pool and a classy trophy. In a hard fought final, the win, the trophy and the cash ultimately went to Anthony Scott (21:061 sec), just pipping out his brother Warren (21:583 sec), Daniel Rickard (21:604sec) and Jeremy Scott (21:833 sec). Pretty tight for a 500m final.

Keep an eye out for Rawhide Roller Racing at a pub or party near you this winter... and bring a fast set of legs.

RACE DIRECTOR'S REVIEW

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Mont 2010, thank you to all for being part of the first hour of the race dedicated to James Williamson. The remaining 23 hours of riding was awesome fun and for many full-on racing. From all reports everyone had a great race and lots of fun.

As the Race Director I was particularly pleased with the overall good manners out on the track. However, there was still some aggro out on the track. Definitely not neccesary, given that every 200m or so there was an overtaking opportunity or fireroad. The rear number plates worked for us on so many levels, let's hope it is picked up in other races.

Paul Cole, our trail master, has been setting 3, 6, 8 and 24 hour courses for many years now and I think that the 2010 Mont was an almost perfect example of a great 24 hour course. Long enough to be tough, hilly enough to be anaerobic, and fast flowing enough to be great fun for all levels of riders. The night riding times were as quick as the day and this is a great indication of an excellent 24 hour track.

Of course, the smiles and comments as you came through transition were great feedback on the course. A big thank you to our course sweeps for maintaining the course in great condition. Our first aid support was top class and they had a relatively quiet weekend (which is a good thing). Even though our injury numbers and severity of injuries was down, there were still a number of people requiring attention. To those injured I wish well you on your recovery and hope you are back on the bike soon.

The timing crew, led by Snozza from Trailmix in Melbourne, were calm and professional as always. There was 9,937 entries in the timing system and less than 1% error rate. Awesome effort.

The volunteers were amazing and for every rider that was asked to not run in transition, to get off the bike or to turn your lights off, there was a volunteer voice supporting you. Their role of making the race safe was well appreciated.

On a final note, thank you all for bringing your smiles, energy and enthusiasm. You make the race what it is.

See you out on a trail somewhere.

ORGANISER'S REVIEW

The 2010 Mont 24 Hour MTB Race was a huge event and certainly our biggest Mont to date. With a weekend full of racing, entertainment and hanging out with friends, the Mont appears to have left smiles on many faces and judging by the feedback we have received it was a great success. How many people came to the Mont? It’s hard to say, but with our largest ever field of entrants combined with their friends, family and many others it certainly felt like a big festival of biking from where we stood. What we do know is that 9937 laps of the course were recorded, covering 191,784 km or roughly 4.8 times around the planet. Not bad for just 23 hours in the saddle.

The highlights were many: fantastic weather during the day, mild temperatures during the night, an absolutely fantastic course loop, the introduction of Rawhide Roller Racing, awesome bike movies, a monster turnout for the kid’s race and a very diverse offering of all things bikery at Event HQ made for a perfect weekend for mountain bikers. We thank you for taking part in the Mont and making the event truly memorable. Special thanks go to the vast number of riders (and perhaps most of you) who took part in the Honour Roll for James Williamson during the first hour of racing. It was a ftting tribute to an outstanding guy.

Now while a lot of work goes into delivering the Mont over the many months before race day an event of this scale is impossible to deliver without the incredible efforts of our Race Crew and the many volunteers who devote their time and energy to the Mont. I extend special thanks to David White (race director), Paul Cole (course director), Raynie McNee (volunteers coordinator and kids race guru), Ben Battisson and Stu Plant (microphone maestros), Kristjan Snorrasen (timing), Rob and Garrett (moto marshalls), Sherrie Cole (rego), Pam Price (shop and day licences) and the tireless tribe of volunteers who worked so hard all weekend. Really well done, and pats on the back all round. Special mention also goes to Shane Spicer and the team from Bike Culture who probably didn’t sleep as they were wrenching like madmen to keep everyone rolling for the entire weekend. Thanks also go to Tim from GuzBox design and audio for making everything sound like it should and to Tod and the crew from Aurora Images for snapping away all weekend to capture the atmosphere of the Mont. Secret thanks go to Awesome Sock Guy who has impressed and educated us all by sharing his hard earned 24hr secrets. Thanks mate... whoever you are.

We’d also like to acknowledge the brilliant support of a very loyal band of sponsors. Naming rights sponsor Mont Adventure Equipment, Major sponsors SRAM / Monza Imports, GU, JetBlack Products, Winners Bars, RSM Bird Cameron, Schwalbe, Jayco, Frameskin and supporting sponsors Enduro Magazine, AMB, Mac1 and Apres Velo. We receive outstanding support and advice from these industry leaders, so I urge you to support them whenever you can.

We would also like to thank everyone who attended the event as it is the people and their good attitudes that give the Mont that special atmosphere. It is also gratifiying and humorous to see the amount of effort that people go to to place their particular flourish on the event each year – the dress ups, the signs, the campsites etc all add colour and character to the Mont. Thank you, it is appreciated. A big thumbs up to the Beoudin of Harum Scarum this year, well done staying in character all weeekend.

Until next year, ride safe and keep the rubber side down
