The Year in Review

Another year has come and gone. Thanks to our team of talented teaching artists, dedicated staff, hard-working school partners, committed parents, and inspiring students, it has been another eventful school year. Through our Student Programs, Parent & Family Workshops, Professional Development, and Auditorium Performances, ENACT partnered with 90 schools throughout the five boroughs this year, working with:
  • 8,279 students
  • 1,672 parents & guardians
  • 703 teachers & school staff
In our six dropout prevention programs, funded by the NYC Council Dropout Prevention & Intervention Initiative and United Way’s Community Achievement Project in Schools (CAPS), ENACT’s on-site staff served 688 middle and high students through in-class and after-school workshops, attendance monitoring, and family outreach. The students from our dropout prevention programs ended the year with an evening of performances - Show Up! 2010 - that celebrated their many achievements during the year and reaffirmed their commitment to excellence in school.

Other 2009-10 highlights include:
  • NYC Council passed the Dropout Prevention & Intervention Initiative in June, ensuring that we’ll be back at Legacy School for Integrated Studies, and Repertory Company High School for Theatre Arts, and begin a new program at M.S. 363 next year! Read more »

The Year in Review (continued)
  • In March ENACT celebrated the first ever Respect for All Week, along with all NYC public schools, the Department of Education, and the City Council. During Respect for All Week, all of ENACT’s programming focused on the negative impact of bias-based behavior.
  • ENACT debuted our new original play, “In My Skin,” at Tottenville High School, Legacy School, and Queens Children’s Center. Michael Jones, an ENACT teaching artist, wrote the new play which explores themes of self-respect and acceptance.
  • In 2009-10, our Parent Advisory Committee grew from 11 to 15 members! The Parent Advisory Committee is a community of support and encourage for ENACT parents and caregivers citywide. Meeting quarterly, they learn about different tools and resources to better support their children, such as the Department of Education’s ARIS Parent Link to stay informed on progress in school.
ENACT students SHOWED UP!

A Special Evening with ENACT

On May 27, students from ENACT’s partnership programs used their powerful voices in front of an audience of nearly 300 family members, teachers, principals, friends and representatives from the Department of Education, NYC Council and United Way. Show Up! 2010, ENACT’s annual year-end student showcase, focused on the challenges that all too often lead students to drop out of school, and on the importance of being present instead of hiding behind technology.

Show Up! 2010 was the culmination of a year-long dropout prevention program, funded by the NYC Council and United Way, at Legacy School for Integrated Studies, Repertory Company High School for Theatre Arts, M.S. 399 and M.S. 8. Special thanks to keynote speaker Juanitya Ayala-Vargas from United Way of New York City, all the volunteers from Credit-Suisse, and the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College.

Founded in 1987, ENACT's mission is to teach New York City public school students social and emotional skills through creative drama and drama therapy techniques.
