ENACT Students Show UP!
Show UP1.jpg

On May 28, ENACT actors alongside 70 students from our partnership schools put on a stunning show at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center in front of 300 parents, friends, school staff, and representatives from NYC Council and NYC Dept. of Education.

Show UP! 2009 celebrated the successes of our students at M.S. 399, M.S. 8, Legacy School for Integrated Studies, and Repertory Company H.S. for Theatre Arts. Accepting an award for spearheading the Dropout Prevention & Intervention Initiative, NYC Council Member Robert Jackson brought thunderous applause, saying "This says, 'Show UP!' Well, I saw stand up for ENACT. Stand up for the dropout initiative!"

From M.S. 8’s Solutions in a Can to Legacy's take on the ABCs, ENACT students explored the challenges that too often result in dropping out of school. In an emotional finale, all the students gathered together on stage, chanting “Yes we can!” to all the obstacles that might keep them from finishing school.

ENACT’s school partnerships are funded by the NYC Council Dropout Prevention & Intervention Initiative and United Way of New York City’s Community Achievement Project in the Schools (CAPS) program.

Another successful year
Thanks to our actor-instructors and the rest of the ENACT team, the 2008-2009 school year was another banner year of in-school and after-school programs. Through ENACT's School Workshop Program, ENACT worked in 62 schools throughout the five NYC boroughs, serving:

  • 4,607 students, incl. 452 students in 15 suspension centers
  • 335 teachers and school staff
  • 60 parents and family members
In ENACT's five partnership schools, funded by the NYC Council Dropout Prevention & Intervention Initiative and United Way's CAPS, ENACT worked throughout the entire school year with:
  • 582 students
  • 100 teachers and school staff
  • 581 parents and family members
Entering the third year of a multi-year grant from the Ford Foundation, ENACT is working with experts from the Center for Arts Education Research at Columbia University on an impact evaluation to examine the ENACT impact. Previous evaluations have already demonstrated that ENACT affects behavior change in our students, impacting the overall classroom climate. Integrating these results, our programs will be better than ever for 2009-2010!

NYC Council dropout prevention funding renewed!
Thanks to all the parents, students, and ENACT friends who showed up on the steps of City Hall or filled out a "We support ENACT!!!" postcard. Because of your efforts, the NYC Council voted to renew the Dropout Prevention & Intervention Initiative for the 2009-2010 school year, awarding $500,000 to ENACT programs! The NYC Council dropout prevention program funds ENACT to bring in-class and after-school workshops all year long to M.S. 399, Legacy School, and Repertory Company H.S.
