SHOW UP! - Save the Date

ENACT is gearing up for our 7th Annual “SHOW UP!” culminating performance on May 15th, at the High School of Hospitality Management in Manhattan.  Every year at “SHOW UP!” students from ENACT’s Dropout Prevention Programs take the stage alongside the teaching artists they have worked with throughout the school year to perform original theatrical works that illustrate the obstacles that many youth face in getting to school.  They also act out the hope and solutions they have learned through the ENACT program. This year’s theme is “Showing Up Against All Odds.”  The performance will be introduced by Dr. Charlotte Frank, Sr. VP, McGraw-Hill Education.

Please RSVP to the performance to

Our show this year will be followed by a fundraising after-party at a local establishment.  Further details will be announced soon.

Thanks NYC Council Members

Special thanks to New York City Council Members Donovan Richards and Fernando Cabrera for stopping by ENACT programs in their districts recently.

Council Member Richards stopped by to visit ENACT’s program at P.S. 183 in Queens, funded through the Cultural After School Adventures program. Our students were proud to show the Council Member what they’ve accomplished through their performance in the culminating event of the project. Council Member Richards selected ENACT to receive the CASA project funding. Thank you!

Council Member Cabrera dropped in on an ENACT parent workshop at Middle School 363 in the Bronx– one of ENACT’s four Dropout Prevention Program sites. He took part along with our ENACT parents and added his unique take on the topic.  Council Member Cabrera has supported ENACT through various initiatives during his tenure in City Council, including the anti-gun violence initiative. We are so grateful for his support and participation in this workshop!

Students Speak
Letters of support have been pouring in from our programs across the city. Here is a snippet from one of our favorite student letters:

ENACT Cares. Jenna, Alex, Elizabeth, Anna and Nick care. They go out of their way for us and show us love. I’m learning that the rainstorms always clear out. That there are people who care. I’ve learned from Alex and Jenna that I love acting. I learned that they are dedicated to helping us. I have also learned that we are a family and always seem to make each other happy. ENACT is an experience I have learned from and can take on in life. The scenes, advice, love and dedication is something I will keep in my heart and give to others. Sometimes I hope to inspire others like ENACT has inspired me.
  Teaching Artist Spotlight

ENACT’s first ever Teaching Artist Spotlight will feature Alicia Thompson. Alicia has worked at ENACT since 2000.

Why I work at ENACT: for the commitment to our community of students, teachers and families, and the collaboration of fellow Teaching Artists.

Favorite ENACT experience: I have had many standout teaching moments but recently during a final performance a very tough, guarded 5th grader, whom I have taught for three years, had a breakthrough moment on stage. She somehow connected the words of a song about resilience to her personal experience and the work that we had done during a 17 session Resilience Workshop. In a moment she became overwhelmed with emotion, broke down and cried! With great conviction and strength, she belted out the words to the audience, singing through the tears, and became 10 feet tall in front of our eyes!! She brought the audience to tears and to our feet. Transformative moments like this are why I continue to work for ENACT!

Hometown: Brooklyn, NY

Who would play me in a movie: Naomie Harris

Favorite NYC Bagel Shop: Bagel Delight

Favorite theater experience: Playing Antigone in Junior High School. Although I knew that I wanted to be an actress, doing that play convinced me that I could be great at it.

Thank you Alicia for your years of service to ENACT. Look out for more about our Teaching Artists on the ENACT website coming soon.
