3-Day Novel News
January 13, 2010

No announcement yet...but soon!

We’re still a little way off from announcing the winners of the 32nd Annual International 3-Day Novel Contest. It’s been a very, very busy winter for all of our judges and for us as administrators, so we thank you for your continued patience! We hope to be able to make an announcement some time in the last week of January. We’ll put a notice up on www.3daynovel.com if that changes, but in the meantime read on for a few distractions, newsy bits and writing opportunities.

3-Day Novel 2010

It may seem like a long way away, but we suspect this year is going to go by fast. The 33rd Annual International 3-Day Novel Contest will take place September 4-6, 2010. Save the date and start stretching your typing fingers! We'll send out word in this newsletter when registration opens this spring.

3-Day reading event

Jason Rapczynski, the winner of the 2008 3-Day Novel Contest, will read from The Videographer at his alma mater, Saint Michael's College in Vermont, on February 4. Drop by if you’re in the area and get a boost of 3-Day fiction in preparation for 2010 contest registration.

Brendan McLeod on the move again

The multi-talented winner of the 2006 3-Day Novel Contest will be appearing at events all over the place in the coming weeks. His solo tour will take him to Montreal, Halifax, Toronto, Guelph and London (Ontario), and he will be at a whole bunch of shows in the Vancouver area throughout January and February. And if you live in Vancouver and haven’t seen the renovated Cultch theatre yet, be sure to check out his band The Fugitives when they play there on January 24. Brendan is the current Curator in Residence at the Cultch, so look for him at shows there all through 2010. Get more information on all of his events at his website.

Oh yeah, and he has also written a play that will be staged at the Cultch on Sunday, February 8, as part of the Fringe Festival’s Joanna Maratta Award. See details at j

Things we like: Indie bookstores

It’s a tough world out there for bookstores these days (we were sad to hear of the recent closure of some great McNally Robinson stores) so it’s always good to find a reason to toast success. Vancouver’s People’s Co-Op Books will be holding a benefit party in celebration of its 65th anniversary.  If you’re in Vancouver, drop by and raise a glass to a venerable Commercial Drive institution! And if you’re not in Vancouver, toast independent bookstores in general by stopping by your own local bookseller and picking up something cool to read. (Hint: start with this shopping list.)
