3-Day Novel News
April 22, 2010

Registration Open Soon!

Registration for the 33rd Annual International 3-Day Novel Contest will open in late May. At long last we will be launching online registration, but traditional snail-mail will still be available for those who want it. (Entrants will still mail in their manuscripts the old-fashioned way. Sorry to those that grumble about this! We do have our reasons.)

We’ve also got a new mailing address in the works, since we’re getting too old and wheezy to carry boxes of manuscripts up and down the stairs. We’ll keep you posted on our new coordinates—in the meantime, our good friends at Geist and Arsenal Pulp Press will make sure we get any mail you send to our old address.

Save the date! The 33rd Annual International 3-Day Novel Contest will take place Labour Day weekend, September 4-6, 2010.

3-Day Novelist News & Successes

LegumeMan Books has released 10 A Boot Stomping 20 A Human Face 30 Goto 10, which was written by Jess Gulbranson of Portland, Oregon, during last year’s 3-Day Novel Contest. The Australian publisher specializes in “extreme and/or unusual fiction for extreme and/or unusual people.” Sounds like a perfect fit for 3DN manuscripts. Find out more about Jess’s book at Amazon.com.

In a previous newsletter we told you about Eric Sparling, a 3DN survivor who found a publisher for Tantramar, his 3-Day novel. Now he’s launching a new literary journal just for novellas. Short Sharp Shock: The Novella Digest is accepting submissions of “fast-paced, seamless popular fiction” of 20-35,000 words. Find FAQs and guidelines at s3digest.blogspot.com.

Did you find success with a 3-Day manuscript or idea? Let us know!

Updates from Past Winners

David Zimmerman, author of Socket, which won the 24th Annual 3-Day Novel Contest, has released a second novel with  Soho Press. The Sandbox examines military life in Iraq, and it got a nice review in a recent edition of the New York Times. Check these books out
and read “Six Questions” with the author at the Ames Tribune.

Shannon Mullally, part of the duo that won the 26th Annual contest with Love Block, has received the Evan Frankel Dissertation Fellowship toward her Ph.D in English from the University of Denver. “My dissertation will reflect my fascination with exploring the possibilities of writing and my passion for gastronomical literature,” says Shannon. “Thank you to the 3-Day Novel team for their continuous optimism for what writers can accomplish...in the nick of time!”

Victoria Dunn—who is actually, and not so secretly, two people—held a “faux book launch” for Alice’s Adventures with Welsh Zombies, the third place-winning manuscript from last year’s contest, at Collected Works bookstore in Ottawa. Read about the event (which included brain-shaped snacks) and see some loopy craftwork at their blog, Handmade by Mother.

New Canadian Distributor for 3-Day Books

Our distributor, Arsenal Pulp Press, is changing its Canadian distributor, which means we’re moving too. As of July 1, Canadian booksellers can order 3-Day Books through University of Toronto Press. Representation is through Kate Walker & Co. As always, individuals can also order direct from us, or ask by title at your local bookstore or library.

And while we’re talking about Arsenal Pulp Press, did we mention they are a third-time finalist for the CBA Small Press Publisher of the Year award? Read about it here
