As the contest nears, the panic sets in for writers who have already signed up. From Canada to Sweden to Japan, they're refining, revising or abandoning their ideas...or just trying to come up with one in the first place. For those who haven't yet signed up, you have until closing time on Friday to get your registration to the post office. Writers in Vancouver have a little more time—we'll be holding our usual last-chance registration drop-off at Lugz. Come hand in your registration, or just pop by to chat and meet with other entrants. Vancouver registration drop off: Friday, Sept. 4, 5 p.m. - 7 p.m., Lugz Coffee Lounge, 2525 Main Street, at Broadway. (Please note: do not leave registrations at the cafe outside this time—put them in the hands of 3-Day personnel only.)
NEW HAVEN: Reading and Post-Contest Meetup NEW YORK: Another change! The Sept. 25 event we listed in the last newsletter must be rescheduled due to a scheduling conflict at the venue. We'll keep you posted on the new date and time. TORONTO: We'll be setting up a booth at this year's Word On The Street in Toronto. Come visit us! And check out this fantastic event in Vancouver, Halifax, and Kitchener, too. Sunday, September 27, all day, various locations. www.thewordonthestreet.ca.
Every
year there's a few entrants who think the contest doesn't provide quite
enough pressure. So they ramp up the stakes a little bit, writing in treehouses, at work, at a wedding, through labour pains or
on TV. Here's a couple of this year's type-A 3-dayers:
The Videographer, last year's winning novel by Jason Rapczynski of New Haven, is in stores now! Ask for it from your favourite bookseller, or order it direct from us. A big thanks to everyone who came out to the launch last week in Toronto. In the Garden of Men, the 2007 winner by John Kupferschmidt of Ottawa, has been longlisted for a 2009 ReLit Award. The ReLits honour independent Canadian literature by celebrating "ideas, not money." Find out more at the ReLit Awards website.
If you're looking for a little helpful pre-contest distraction, don't forget to check out the Survival Guide, the Writers' Resources page, our fabulous friends in the literary world, and our list of comments from past entrants. The next issue of 3-Day News will include the usual links to other writing contests. (We figured that, for most of you, there's only one contest on your immediate horizon!) |
