MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Real Facts ... No April Fooling

Howard Headshot 2

How often have you heard the following said:

  • “You can’t get a good education at a HBCU”
  • “The HBCU experience doesn’t measure up”
  •  “Why go to a HBCU, the world is not all Black”
  •  “Howard may be good, but it’s not that good”
  •  “Bison support Howard better than other alumni at their schools”

No doubt, you have heard any or all of the above, and probably already had your responses all lined up, but the last statement might stop you in your tracks. FACT: we as Howard alumni do not support Alma Mater the way we should and certainly not better than any other alumni group.  This is my point, since we, as Howard alumni, do talk about the fact that we are better than any other alumni group out there.  Here’s another FACT: our alumni giving rate is only around 10%.

So who’s more foolish?  Us, for believing we are better? Or Congress, for supporting Howard when we don’t...? Did I touch a nerve? I hope so, and, that is my other point.  This is not about shaming us for our past but encouraging us, from this point onward, to do better than what the best alumni groups are doing because we are better than the best alumni groups anywhere. So we say, now we must prove.

If we, as Bison, are not willing to step up for our own University, whom are we fooling?

Howard Trustee, Renee Higginbotham-Brooks, said it best during the 146th Charter Day Convocation: “we as alumni, must own the responsibility of Howard University.”  The Board of Trustees Chair Emeritus, Frank Savage, echoed that sentiment with his own words: “The world needs Howard at its best.”

That is my charge, and as President of the Howard University Alumni Association, I therefore charge you to take this opportunity to enroll with HUAA, donate to the University, and let’s show the world that Howard Bison are no fools.  The Time Is Now.
