Washington DC
We are just a couple weeks away from our CADCA Conference in Washington DC! On February 6th, representatives from the Coalition and four youth coordinators from the Coalition and NEO will be attending the annual CADCA National Leadership Forum. While at the conference, we will be attending several workshops on fostering youth leadership and the implementation and evaluation of action strategies to address community problems. We will also be meeting with Congressman Tom McClintock and Senator Dianne Feinstein to educate law makers on the effectiveness of substance abuse prevention, education, and treatment and make them aware of our grass roots efforts here in Nevada County. The youth coordinators will have an opportunity to brainstorm with NIDA scientists on how to bring this valuable information back to teens in their community.

Overtime
Many thanks to the Faith Sector and NEO for their help with Overtime at Park Avenue Alternative school is up and running! The last three Fridays we've seen a growing interest from the youth in this exciting new program. Last week we had over 60 kids come by to hang out and participate in Overtime activities. With ping pong tournaments, video game systems, a consession stand, and tons of other things to do, it's no wonder Overtime is starting to catch on! We'd like to thank all wonderful volunteers who continue to help out with setting up, supervising, and breaking down. We greatly appreciate it!
For more information on how you can help with Overtime, please contact Randy Fields.
Get Involved!
If you've got time on Friday nights, come by, help out, bring some youth and find out what all the fun is about!

Monthly Asset Tip
Asset 18: Youth Programs
For many young people, youth programs at school and in the community are the highlight of their day. They meet new people who share their interests or introduce them to new pursuits. They spend time with adults who also enjoy the activity. Research shows that young people who regularly spend time in sports, clubs, or other youth programs have higher self-esteem and better leadership skills, and are less likely to feel lonely. About 57 percent of young people, ages 11–18, spend three or more hours a week in youth programs, according to Search Institute. Young people involved in interesting activities helps bring out their best. For more information on the 40 Assets, click HERE.

Steering Committee Meeting
On January 13th, the Steering Committee gathered for a special meeting with guests speakers to discuss the harmful repercussions of legalizing marijuana in California. We had a very impressive turn out and a strong representation of sectors. There were several guest speakers including Dr. Bishop Ron Allen from the International Faith Based Coalition, Aimee Hendle & John Redman from CADFY, and Michelle Gregory from the Department of Justice. Our speakers were able to convey the importance of bringing all sectors together and educating the community as to the dangers of legalizing marijuana. In order to do this, it is essential to change community norms surrounding this issue.
If you increase the availability of a drug you increase its use. If you decrease the perception of harm and risk in youth, you increase its use. Marijuana does both.
