We’re very excited that once again, Celebrity Football Players from the Northern California Retired NFL Players Association will partner with the Coalition by returning to Nevada County to share an encouraging message to youth in our area. This year marks the 4th year in a row that these NFL greats come from all over Northern California to talk to kids the importance of education, parent support and about how the life choices they make today play a major role in their future opportunities.

Adults and youth of all ages are invited to join on Saturday August 21st from 3-7 at the Nevada Union Miners Football Field for this prevention event including a free BBQ sponsored by NEO, the Coalition for a Drug Free Nevada County, and Community Recovery Resources. The following day on Sunday the 22nd these NFL greats play in the Ninth Annual Bill Schultz Golf Classic in support of substance abuse treatment and prevention.

Update from the Quarterly Meeting

Members of the Sacramento Alcohol and Youth Coalition shared their experiences on the Social Hosting Ordinance recently passed by the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, at our Quarterly Coalition Update on July 21.  Christy Adams, a register nurse at UC Davis Health Systems, Becky Wood from Mothers Against Drunk Drivers,  Joelle Orrockof Friday Night Live(FNL)/Sacramento and a youth coordinator with FNL,  emphasized the need to talk to as many groups as possible to get input before embarking on a project of this magnitude.  “We talked to groups in each supervisor’s district.  One supervisor asked us to speak to multiple groups.  We learned a lot and it helped to answer some of the questions many people had about the ordinance,” explained Mariah Funk, NEO Coordinator.  The speakers also stressed that the Social Hosting Ordinance was only one part of their Coalition’s ongoing effort to change social norms on underage drinking. The main element of the ordinance is to provide law enforcement a tool to cite the individual who hosts or provides a setting for underage drinking to take place.

Also, at the Coalition meeting, Galen El-Askari , a local evaluator, presented our STOP Act project Logic Model .  This road map will focus Coalition activities on anticipated outcomes to prevent and reduce alcohol use among underage youth and young adults. Funds from this grant augment our Coalition’s current activities towards reducing substance abuse among youth in our county. STOP stands for “Sober Truth on Preventing Underage Drinking Act”.” Key strategies include: Youth outreach activities in downtown Grass Valley, training of brief intervention screening and referral techniques for healthcare providers and activities aimed at decreasing our community’s perceived acceptance of underage drinking.

NEO "Rocks" their way through summer at Thursday Night Markets!

Despite headlines after the first market claiming that the markets attract troublesome teens, NEO believes differently; the markets are really a place for teens doing good things!

Every Thursday Night the NEO stage is surrounded by upwards of 150 teenagers, who are there to enjoy the good music provided by their peers.  Each night the NEO stage features upwards of 20 young performers, all under the age of 25..  These young people are making the choice to reach out and share NEO's message in order to create a better community for themselves and others.

NEO has even received praise from the Grass Valley Downtown Association, "NEO has worked hard with the local drug free community and youth to provide an opportunity for youth. They continue to provide alternative solutions to many who say there is nothing to do in Nevada County and we applaud them. Working for this result is positive and productive! We should consider it meritorious.  As we all may enjoy our community, the Market and our stores.  Thanks for the help."

Senator Supports Campaign to Defeat Marijuana Legalization Initiative

The Los Angeles Times reported that Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) supports a campaign to defeat her state's controversial marijuana legalization ballot measure, Proposition 19. Feinstein called it "a jumbled legal nightmare that will make our highways, our workplaces and our communities less safe."

The prominent Democrat, first elected to the Senate in 1992, signed the ballot argument against the initiative. Roger Salazar, spokesman for Public Safety First, said the opposition committee sought Feinstein's support.
