 Dear Coalition Members,
|
I feel encouraged to come back from the National Leadership Forum in Washington D.C. with new insight and tools to implement which in turn will grow our recent successes into well-rounded campaigns. Our youth coordinators, Halli Ellis, Lynn Skrukrud, and administrative staff, Shelley Rogers and Warren Daniels attended the conference with me, making for a fun and educational trip. You may log onto Coalition website photo gallery to view some of the many photos taken during the week of the conference. We were fortunate to meet with some of our representatives including Congressman Tom McClintock, and Senator Dianne Feinstein’s Counsel. Congressman Tom McClintock is a new member of the Coalition and I’m sure if Warren Daniels has anything to say about it, Mr. McClintock will be sitting next to one of you in our Coalition meetings in the near future.
Take Care,
Tasha Meyer Program Manager

Coalition Quarterly Meeting at Nevada Union High School: The 2nd Quarter Meeting is coming up on Wednesday, March 4th at 3pm in the Nevada Union High School Library. The five coalition members who visited D.C. will highlight new information and tools they obtained from the workshops. There will also be a short discussion on whether to restructure the way in which the sectors meet. Should we keep the sectors meeting separately each month? Or, do you feel monthly meetings for specific campaigns or projects with every sector at the table will have more of an impact and create more efficiency? This is going to be a great meeting with new ideas, tools, and the need for your voice on how your coalition can continue running successfully to improve the positive outcomes in your community.
If you haven’t been able to attend a meeting in a while, We invite you to sit in and see what your community is actively working on to create positive change. Please contact us with questions or ideas.

Did you know? Beer Commercials among Favorite Super Bowl Ads for Teens
Earlier this month, during the Super Bowl game, it wasn´t just the game that left a lasting impression on teens. The beer commercials were also a big hit. That´s according to a survey conducted by our local Youth Sector and drug free coalitions across the country that found that beer ads were among teens´ top five favorite Super Bowl ads. Visit cadca.org for more information...
Positive Findings:
From 2007 to 2008, the percentage of 10th-graders reporting lifetime, past year, and past month use of any illicit drug other than marijuana declined significantly. Lifetime use decreased from 18.2 to 15.9 percent, past-year use declined from 13.1 to 11.3 percent, and past-month use decreased from 6.9 to 5.3 percent.
Areas of Concern
In 2008, 15.4 percent of 12th-graders reported using a prescription drug nonmedically within the past year. This category includes amphetamines, sedatives/barbiturates, tranquilizers, and opiates other than heroin. Vicodin continues to be abused at unacceptably high levels. Many of the drugs used by 12th-graders are prescription drugs or, in the case of cough medicine, are available over the counter.4
The above facts from NIDA, National Institute on Drug Abuse. Visit NIDA.org for more information.
