2nd Permanent Rx Drop Off Site Opens locally!
As of December 21st, we are pleased to announce that the Kmart Prescription & Sharps Disposal site is officially open! We’re so excited to report that together our community is making great progress toward reducing youth access to prescription drugs. In the first 12 months alone, we have collected over 500 pounds of prescription drugs, promoted a media campaign, provided community-wide education and opened two collection sites!
Special Thanks to The Union, Jeff Klus Construction, the Real Graphic Source, Rex Marks and the Grass Valley Police Dept., Daria Kent and Nevada County Recycles, Bob Meier and KMart, for all there help getting the KMart Prescription & Sharps Disposal site up and running.

Monthly Asset Tip
Asset 11: Family Boundaries
Clear, Concise, Consistent Boundaries
Research shows that young people are more likely to engage in positive behaviors and attitudes—and less likely to practice high-risk behaviors—if their families set clear rules and consequences and monitor the young people’s whereabouts.

Back to DC!
As you all know, last year representatives from the Coalition traveled back east to Washington DC for the yearly CADCA conference. Each year we’ve returned from the conference with valuable tools to implement strategies to reduce youth substance abuse. Programs such as the SBIRT (Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment) training and the Prescrption Drug Campaign both stemmed from workshops at last year's conference. The youth coordinators also learned tools that help them as prevention leaders and peer advocates. We are planning on doing it again this February, bringing three new youth coordinators, and look forward to coming back with even more valuable tools to benefit our great community!

Marijuana use rises among high school students as cigarette use declines
A recent study shows that high school students around the country are using marijuana more this year than past years. Along with the increase in use is a decrease in the perceived harm in recreational usage of the drug. However, also down from last year is the use of illicit drugs by high school kids. The study goes on to show that cigarette smoking among teens is at an all time low, which some experts speculate could be attributed to a possible rise in smokeless tobacco use. For more information on this study and other studies involving our youth, click on the headline above or check out these great sites!
