Dear Coalition Members, Wednesday the Coalition meets at Nevada Union School Please join us for A community prevention forum Wednesday, March 4th at 3pm. We'll begin with a presentation in the Science lecture hall and move down to the beautiful newly remodeled Library. Easiest access will be to park in the front parking lot on Ridge Road. There should be plenty of parking at this time of day. You'll walk down the steps and the Library and Science Hall are on the left at the bottom of the stairs. This is going to be a great meeting with new ideas, tools, and the need for your voice.
If you haven’t been able to attend a meeting in a while, We invite you to sit in and see what your community is actively working on to create positive change. We hope to see you there.

NEO Sure Has Been Busy the Last Couple of Weekends... NEO helped sponsor an 80's dance for the Lyman Gilmore After School Program (GASP). They hope the dance will help to promote the program and boost attendance. GASP holds monthly NEO meetings for the students in the program in order to voice their opinions and share upcoming NEO events. The 80's dance was a success and had over 85 students sign in to listen to 80's music, play pacman, watch E.T., and dance the evening away in their like totally awesome 80's outfits. Click here to view more photos at the Coalition Photogallery. Thank you to everyone in the coalition that helped chaperone!

Did you know? Positive Findings:
More Teens 'Learning a Lot' about Drug Risks From Parents
The Partnership for a Drug-Free America announced findings from the 2008 Partnership Attitude Tracking Study (PATS), which revealed the first major increase in the number of teens who reported "learning a lot" about the risks of drugs from their parents. The study shows that 37 percent of teens reported learning a lot about the risks of drugs from their parents, a significant 16 percent increase from the previous year and the first major increase since the inception of the study. Research consistently shows that teens who learn a lot about the risks of drugs at home are up to 50 percent less likely to use, yet many parents have difficulty talking with their kids about drugs and alcohol. Tobacco Prevention efforts bring positive outcomes
Cigarette smoking continues to fall to the lowest rate in the survey's history. Between 2007 and 2008, declines were observed in lifetime, past-month, and daily cigarette use among 10th-graders. Although there were no 1-year declines for 8th- and 12th-graders over the past year, all grades surveyed have continued a longer term trend of declining cigarette use. These findings are particularly noteworthy since tobacco addiction is one of the leading preventable contributors to many of our Nation's health problems. for more information visit: NIDA National Institute on Drug Abuse
Areas of Concern:
Perceived harmfulness and disapproval of marijuana and inhalant use softened among 8th-graders this year
Attitudes toward substance abuse, often seen as harbingers of change in rates of use, were mostly stable. However, among 12th-graders, perceived risk of harm associated with LSD continues to decrease. Additionally, perceived harmfulness and disapproval of marijuana and inhalant use softened among 8th-graders this year. This information is based on data from the 2008 MTF Monitoring the future survey. for more information visit: NIDA National Institute on Drug Abuse

Resources: What can you do? Tips for preventing Rx abuse
Think about your home. What prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs do you have? Where are they kept? Would you know if some were missing? The good news is that you can take steps immediately to limit access to these drugs and help keep your teen drug-free: Visit Parents, The Anti Drug for more information on what you can do.
