NEO Visits San Francisco!
Lynn Skrukrud, Mariah Funk & Chris Ellison
infront of the Bay Bridge
On June 19th NEO Coordinators Mariah Funk, Chris Ellison and Lynn Skrukrud made the trip to San Francisco for a leadership conference hosted by DoSomething.org.
Do Something is the largest youth organization in the country! They aim to inspire, empower and celebrate a generation of doers: young people who recognize the need to do something, they believe in their ability to get it done, and take action.
At the conference Mariah, Chris and Lynn attended workshops on a variety of topics including how to run an effective meeting, using social media tools, becoming a leader and more.
Thursday Night Markets
The expanded Thursday Night Markets start this week and NEO will be back again with their youth section!
Three years ago, when NEO was first starting they were asked to find a way to alleviate the youth "issues" that were occuring at the market. The organizers of the market had attemped several times to address the challenges they were facing with young people by changing the night of the markets and even closing earlier, but nothing seemed to work. When NEO stepped in they realized that the young people just wanted somewhere to go where they could express themselves through music and the arts and have fun with their friends at the same time, thus they created the youth section.
Each night in their section, NEO hosts bands, dj's, dancers and performers of all kinds all under the age of 25.
They are pleased to report that at the end of last years markets organizers stated that they had seen no youth issues and attributed it to NEO presence! The markets will even stay open a half an hour later this year as a result!
This year NEO will be located on South Auburn Street in the parking lot between Packard Carpet and Carolines Coffee, be sure to stop by, say hi and enjoy the music and performances!
CDC Calls for Urgent Action on Abuse of Pain Medication
More than 13,000 deaths involving opioids occur in the U.S. each year.
Nonmedical use of prescription pain relievers rose 111 percent between 2004 and 2008, according to a new study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Reuters reported June 17th.
The study showed that emergency-room visits increased from 144,644 in 2004 to 305,885 in 2008; the trend cut across age and gender lines. Oxycodone, hydrocodone, and methadone were the three most-abused drugs, rising 152 percent, 123 percent, and 73 percent, respectively, during the study timeframe.
