Dear Agency 6-20 Families and Friends,

We are very thankful for the volunteers and volunteer coaches that we have within our agency. However, we are always in need of more help, and would welcome more individuals becoming Class A Volunteers and also certified coaches in each of the sports offered by our agency.

Following is some general information. More information can be found on the Special Olympics of Wisconsin website or on the WMYSO website under the "WMYSO Info" and "Calendar" Tabs.

Class A Volunteers

Anyone who has direct contact with athletes or is in a position of authority, supervision or trust of athletes or handles substantial amounts of cash or other assets for Special Olympics needs to be a registered Class A volunteer.

Duties may include: Coaching, committee work, agency management, adult chaperones, drivers

Class A volunteer requirements:

1. Submit a Class A Registration Form to the Special Olympics program office (requires background check). You can obtain this form from Mary Jo Parman at parmamj1@yahoo.com or 608-215-4385. Or, you may request that the form be sent to you directly from the Special Olympics of WI office. Please indicate whether you need the minor form (age 8-18) or the adult form.

2. Complete the Protective Behaviors Training and Test at
online Protective Behaviors training and test
- this must be done every three years to maintain active status. It only takes about 10-20 minutes to complete.

3. View the General Orientation video at a training or view it online and take the General Orientation Test .

Volunteer Coaches

To become a certified coach, volunteers must be a registered Class A Volunteer, attend a sports-specific Certified Training School, and complete a minimum of 10 hours of practical coaching experience with Special Olympics athletes.

The coaches training calendar lists all upcoming trainings and their locations, and is updated regularly. When you click on a specific training of interest, you will be able to download the registration form. Please note that an Athletics (track and field) coaches training will be held in the Madison area (Area 6) sometime this spring, date yet to be determined. Since many of our athletes participate in track and field, more certified coaches would be extremely helpful. Also coming up soon are:

March 25 – Soccer ( Green Bay )
April 18 – Aquatics (Barron)
April 25 – Soccer (Oconomowoc)

These training sessions are free and only require travel to a training site and a two to four hour time commitment learning strategies to teach and perform the sports activity.

If you have any questions about volunteering/coaching, please feel free to contact me. If you are not sure if you are already a Class A Volunteer, or are wondering if there are any requirements you are missing, I can check that out for you. I'm just getting my feet wet on this stuff, but will do my best to help you figure it out.

Thanks.
