Invitation for Research Proposals
The Joule Centre now wishes to invite proposals for research projects from eligible organisations within the area of the North West Development Agency.
In this call, applications are invited for “Seed Corn” Grants. These may be for research on any aspect of energy and may last for up to one year. The maximum budget per grant is £50,000 and the total budget for Grants in this 5th call will be approximately £300,000. All grants must be completed by 30th September 2010.
Proposals should be submitted via email to the Joule Centre Administrator by 17:00 on 30th September 2009.
The objective of “Seed Corn” Grants is to stimulate new areas of research and it is expected that they will lead on to major projects funded by others.
For further information on eligibility and the application process, please contact Laura Mitchell, laura.mitchell@manchester.ac.uk

New tidal flume makes waves in offshore renewable energy markets
A Joule-funded combined wave and tidal flume can now be hired by engineering companies and consultancies looking to conduct physical tests of nearshore structures or renewable energy devices. Designed specifically for shallow hydraulic flows such as those found in coastal regions, the Joule Centre Wave Flume allows simulation of realistic nearshore wave and current conditions and is particularly well suited to the evaluation of marine energy devices and their environmental impact.

Joule Director ‘Talks Energy’ on Radio 4
Professor Peter Crossley, Director of the Joule Centre, has contributed to BBC Radio 4’s You and Yours as part of a discussion on the temporary closure of nuclear plants in France and the subsequent need to import energy from the UK. Prof. Crossley also spoke about the planned integration of energy networks across Europe, which would reduce fuel prices and lead to greater energy stability.

Northwest Hydro Resource Model Available Soon
The Northwest Hydro Resource Model is a Joule Centre project undertaken by Lancaster University which address the various barriers to the deployment of small-scale hydro power. At the heart of this research - which is nearing completion - is a web based tool which provides answers to questions about small scale hydro power. As an online information resource, visitors to the site can easily access advice on a range of topics including: payback periods, site suitability, community engagement and environmental considerations. Users are directed to expert advice where necessary. Keep an eye out for more info in the next Joule newsletter in September.
