April 17: Dance/USA will host its 7th Annual Conference in Miami, FL from Wednesday, June 17 through Saturday, June 20, 2015. Nearly 500 individuals will convene for the country’s broadest gathering of dance professionals, including executive directors, artistic directors, development directors, agents, artists, emerging arts leaders, company managers, marketing directors, dance service organizations, and more. Early Bird rates for the 2015 Dance/USA Annual Conference end THIS FRIDAY April 17, 2015. Save money on registration fees and join your colleagues in Miami this June for four enriching days of networking, professional development, open dialogue, and performances.

April 18: Alabama Asian Cultures Foundation invites interested dance student to participate in one of two Master Dance Sessions to be presented by members of the H.T. Chen Dance Company from New York City at the Children's Dance Foundation building (1715 27th Court South, Homewood, AL 35209) from 10:00-11:00 am on Saturday April 18, 2015. Session A is for children ages 7-12 (limit 20); and Session B is for teens and adults (limit 25). H.T. Chen’s master classes emphasize a bold and weighty dance aesthetic drawing on both traditional Chinese movements and American modern dance. The classes will include Tai Ch’I- and Chinese Opera Movement-based exercises and progress to H.T. Chen’s style and repertoire while moving expansively through space.

April 18: Join Sanspointe Dance Company for our 1st round of 2015 IMPROVable FICTIONS @ Railroad Park in Birmingham from 1:30-2:30pm on Saturday, April 18th. We will post throughout the day on FB, Twitter, and Instagram. Come find us! Dance improvisations, inventions, and explorations in and around greater Birmingham, Alabama; taking place from April-June 2015.

April 19: The premiere Chinese-American dance company, H.T. Chen & Dancers returns to Birmingham for the Alabama premiere of their newest work “South of Gold Mountain.” This original work is inspired by stories collected throughout the South and features they company’s signature dynamic style and will also include local dancers who will rehearse with the company during their week-long residency. For over 35 years, H.T. Chen & Dancers has created a uniquely Asian-American expression by embodying its cultural heritage. Infusing Western modern dance with the strength and beauty of Asian aesthetics, the company has enchanted audiences across the United States, Europe and Asia since its inception.

May 1-3: The Alabama School of Fine Arts Department of Dance presents "Celebrating Spring with Dance" on Friday and Saturday, May 1 & 2, 7:30 pm and Sunday, May 3 at 2:30 pm at the Dorothy Jemison Day Theater, 800 19th Street North, Birmingham, AL 35203. Purchase tickets online at www.djdtheater.org or by calling 205-458-0360. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Enjoy ample parking at Boutwell Parking Deck, open lots and curbside.

May 16: Sanspointe Dance Company presents "FORUM, a Choreography Showcase" Saturday, May 16th, 7-9pm, at Children's Dance Foundation, 1715 27th Court South, Homewood, AL, 35209. This is s FREE event for choreographers and audiences. Our goal is to create a hybrid event based on our previous choreography salons; featuring a low-tech environment and low-cost performance outlet. The evening will include dance works presented in a showcase theatrical concert, followed by a feedback session moderated by our Artistic Director, Taryn Packheiser Brown.

May 16: Alabama Youth Ballet and students of Grebel Dance present The Sleeping Beauty on Saturday, May 16, 3:00 pm at Pelham High School. Choreography by Stevan Grebel after Marius Petipa and music by Tchaikovsky. Pre-ordered tickets are $10 or $15 at the door. Tickets bought online will be available at WILL CALL. There is a $2 handling fee for each order online. Please leave a note of your seat selection. All seats are reserved.

This year, 2015, is the 50th anniversary of the signing of the National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act of 1965, which created the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. To better recount the story of the NEA and the arts in America, we want to share your story of how the arts have influenced your life. Tell us how the arts are part of your day, how the arts have inspired you to do something unique, how they have made a difference among you and your family, as well as in the communities and neighborhoods in which you live. If there is a specific NEA grant that has had an impact on you and your community, let us know.
