Festival Applications Due October 1 for Registration Discounts!

Apply for a half or full registration scholarship by submitting a Financial Need Application and/or submit an Ambassador Application for a 30% registration discount. Parents who are available to work as full-time volunteers on January 16-18 may apply for Chief Ambassador. If selected, you will receive a free registration for yourself and one dancer. Both applications are due on October 1 and recipients will be notified by October 15. Performance applications for the New Works Concert and Festival Showcases are due on November 1.

Sept 26-28, Oct 3-5: Alabama Ballet at Home features selected repertory, including an encore of Agnes DeMille’s Rodeo, all performed in the Ballet’s home studio. With complimentary drinks and a more personal atmosphere, Alabama Ballet at Home is a great way to introduce friends and family to the excitement of live performance. The performances take place September 26-28 and October 3-5. For tickets visit alabamaballet.org or call our box office at (205) 202-8142.

Sept 27: Nathifa Dance Company & Outreach, Inc. announces an Open House for the DANCE AFRICA BIRMINGHAM Fall Project 2014 on September 20th & 27th. Classes will start in October and run through December on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Classes will consist of African dance, drums and fabric design. Participants and members from NDC will present their work during two Kwanzaa celebrations. A limited number of scholarships will be offered. October 2 & 9: Please join Youssouf Koumbassa for an amazing high energy dance class series with live drumming provided by Mitch Caponetto, John Scalici and friends. Classes are on Thursdays, October 2 & 9, 7:00-8:30 pm at Birmingham Dance Theatre, 100 Olde Towne Rd #100, Vestavia Hills, 35216. All levels welcome, ages 16+. $13 per class, $5 viewing donation. October 1: The Wallace Foundation will announce the new arts initiative on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at 3:00pm ET via a live stream. The live-streamed event will feature a panel of arts leaders addressing the question, "Why Does Engaging New Arts Audiences Matter?" The discussion will be moderated by Kurt Andersen, Host of NPR's Studio 360, and the panelists include: Robert Battle, Artistic Director, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; Jane Chu, Chairman, National Endowment for the Arts; James Houghton, Founding Artistic Director, Signature Theatre Company; Kelly Tweeddale, Executive Director, Seattle Opera.

October 4-25: Professional Modern/Contemporary Dance Movement Workshop Series taught by Sanspointe Dance Company members. $18 drop-in or $15 if registering for all four classes in the series. October 11: Red Mountain Theatre Company is proud to present a master class with Chet Walker on October 11, 10-12 pm. Register now to train under one of the best! Class is for intermediate level and above, ages 13 and up. Class fee is $50. Multi-award winning Director/Choreographer Chet Walker has garnered acclaim onstage in theaters across the globe, in television, film, music video and all commercial media. Chet originally conceived the 1999 Tony-Award-winning musical FOSSE, and most recently received the Outer Critics Circle Award, the Drama Desk Award, the Astaire Award and a Tony nomination for his choreography of Stephen Shwartz's PIPPIN.

October 31: Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival welcomes you to apply to perform on the free Inside/Out Series, on the outdoor Henry J. Leir Stage, June 24 to August 30, 2015. Deadline to apply is October 31, 2014. The Inside/Out Series is a beloved tradition at Jacob's Pillow, offering free dance performances in all styles and genres to more than 20,000 enthusiastic audience members every summer. Please remember that both the content and production needs of your presentation must be appropriate for a free outdoor venue with sound only. There are no lights, wings or other staging, and the performance moves indoors in the event of rain.

Wednesdays & Sundays: Join us at Grebel Center for Dance for this class geared for the athlete in everyone! This class, based in ballet, will develop agility, flexibility, timing, strength and power. This class was designed and developed by Stevan Grebel to facilitate athletes in any program. Give us a try and see how it helps! (No tutus required). Classes are offered on Wednesdays at 6:15-7:15pm, Sundays at 2:00-3:00, and by appointment.

Tuesdays: Children's Dance Foundation announces a new level for Adult Contemporary Dance classes. This beginner-level class, taught by Sara Turney, will focus on developing muscular coordination, core strength, and the basic technical elements of dance while exploring contemporary createive movement. The intermediate/advanced class is taught by CDF Artistic Director Heidi Stoeckley. The classes are on Tuesdays, 5:30-6:30, beginning September 2 – December 20 on a drop-in basis at $10 per class or $142 for the semester.
