With the holidays approaching, it's easy to get caught up in a festive frenzy, but as you rush frantically towards the end of the year, take a moment to reflect on the joy you have given and received over the past 12 months. At the DTRC we are grateful to our many members, friends and supporters for the joy they share with us through their creativity and generosity of spirit.
On behalf of the DTRC staff and board, may you all enjoy a safe and happy holiday season.

| EI benefits for the self-employed |
| Self-employed to get EI benefits [courtesy of CBC website]
The Conservative government has introduced legislation that will allow the self-employed to opt into the federal employment insurance plan and collect benefits currently available only to wage-earners and salaried workers.
The Fairness for the Self-Employed Act will extend maternity, parental, adoption, medical and compassionate-care benefits to self-employed workers.
"Self-employed Canadians should not have to choose between their family and business responsibilities," Minister of Human Resources Diane Finley told reporters in Toronto on Tuesday. "Extending access to these benefits is the fair and right thing to do."
Self-employed workers can sign up for the plan beginning Jan. 1, 2010, and can start claiming benefits one year later.

| More than 1,500 artists resond to survey |
Thanks to all the artists who participated in the Senior Artists' Research Project (SARP) survey and town hall discussions. We have been overwhelmed by the level of participation in this project. Over 1,500 senior artists from across the country completed the survey, and over 160 participated in one of the 17 town hall sessions.
Hill Strategies Research is now examining the responses, stories and other information shared by participants and will prepare a report outlining artists’ needs and interests in areas such as artistic activity, health care, retirement, housing, financial issues, community connections and social networks.
The information will be used to improve current services or establish new services for Canadian senior artists. The incredible input from many different artists will help the organizations design services that best meet artists’ needs and interests.
