CANFIT Connection:
Creating After School Health Advocates
In this September 2010 newsletter:

  • Community and after school advocates are the key to improving childhood health. Despite the many challenges, direct service staff can be the biggest role models and supporters to make healthy eating and physical activity changes. And here are 3 tools that can help:  99 Ways to Make After School Healthier (8 pages),  After School Physical Activity Pyramid (1 page) or the Physical Activity Guidelines Matrix (2 pages). lllljjjljjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjllllllllllljjj CANFIT has a variety of resources to improve nutrition and fitness. Check out PHAT and MO Project, both youth-led programs using hip hop culture and media to deliver health messages to today's teens.

  • Congratulations CANFIT 2010-2011 Scholarship Recipients! CANFIT provides scholarships for students expressing financial need to study nutrition, physical education or culinary arts.  The 2010 - 2011 Recipients are: Karemi Alvarez (UC Berkeley), Portia Jackson (UCLA), Socorro Dalton (SFSU), Kristine Martinez (Cal Poly) and Matthew Vazquez (LBSU). For more info, visit CANFIT Scholarships.

  • It's crunch time to pass a Child Nutrition Bill. FRAC encourages you to urge members to pass a bill that does not make critical cuts to SNAP. Get call info here. Listen to the recent debate on NPR. To take further action, write a letter to support the urgent renewal of the bill by September 30.

  • The Dark Side of Vitamin Water, from the Huffington Post, exposes the truth of sugar-sweetened beverages. For more interesting links and articles, follow CANFIT on Twitter.
