Hello Erin,

2010 Brings Many Changes and Much Growth at the Friends

Good Luck Sarah Waller!

Sarah3.jpgThe Friends bids a fond farewell to our long time Stewardship Coordinator, Sarah Waller, as she embarks on the next big adventure of her life, motherhood.  During her four years with the Friends, Sarah tripled both the number of restoration events annually and the number of volunteers engaged in the program.  Sarah is a gifted storyteller with a passion for sharing the history of the watershed while inspiring people to take a lead in shaping its future.  We will miss Sarah's vibrant smile and infectious enthusiasm for all projects she takes on.  We wish her and her new family the best of luck and fully expect to see them around the watershed soon!

       Welcome Nisa Karimi!

Nisa Kari
Nisa Karimi.JPGmi     joined us last week as the Friends' new Stewardship Coordinator. Nisa brings a wealth of experience and a passion for ecological restoration to her work.  Her career has taken her from her home state of Wisconsin to San Ignacio, Peru and Olympia, Washington where she earned a degree in Ecology from the Evergreen State College.  The Friends is very pleased  that she has now chosen to join us in Seattle. Nisa is fluent in Spanish, is a wildcrafting (foraging for wild edible plants) enthusiast and an avid cook. We look forward to working with her to expand restoration programs throughout the watershed as we build partnerships reaching from Maple Valley to Lake Forest Park.  Welcome Nisa!  We are glad you are part of our growing team.

Connecting with the Cedar River Community

The Friends water droplet.jpgis kicking off the new year by expanding our circle through Community Outreach Events and engaging local businesses through Corporate Sponsorships. Do you have friends and colleagues who want to get together to discuss how they can support the watershed?  Is there a business that you could nominate to pledge support for FCRW in 2010?  Linking up our community around issues of stewardship and citizen engagement is where  we can really make a difference in the river's health and the sustainability of the watershed.  Our first Community Event will convene community leaders, fly fishers, and others interested in the watershed at the home of Friends' supporters in the lower basin.  The Corporate Sponsorship program will launch in February. Please click on the links above to learn how to get involved.

In His Own Words: Our Friend David Parker Tells His Story

Growing Up in the Town of Cedar Falls

My dad was a senior operator at the Cedar Falls power plant for 35 years and I lived at Cedar Falls until I was 18 and went to college. I graduated out of a two waterfall.JPGroom school house at Cedar Falls, going then to North Bend High School.  In that two-room school house Miss Peterson had the first four grades and Miss Vinup had the older four grades of Cedar Falls kids.  I was actually the last person to get a diploma from North Bend High School in 1944.  This happened because my dad was a class sponsor for the 27 of us in that class.  Dad pulled my diploma out of the basket, put it in the very back and made sure I was the last one to get a diploma before the school closed. I went to the University of Washington in 1944 and then into the Navy, after graduating in 1953.
