Muscle burns more calories than fat does, 73 more kilograms per day to be exact, so the more muscle you build, the higher your resting metabolic rate will be. Every muscle cell you gain is like a little internal fire that burns calories for your body, even while you are sleeping! Who doesn't want that right? So the most effective way to increase your metabolism is to gain muscle! Choosing exercises that will maximize your muscle gain will help you burn more calories the fastest. Exercises that are multifunctional, using many body parts at once is a great way to fire your internal fire and burn calories. Also, recruiting muscles that you don't normally fire in your daily routine will help you incorporate maximum amounts of muscle in your body. Exercises that engage your core muscles are examples of these kind of muscles

Just because you stuck behind a desk, you can still sneak in some exercise during the day to help build muscle and give your metabolism a boost. Here's a good one for you daytime desk-jockeys. No Excuses!

This exercise is designed to strengthen the triceps muscle in your upper arms. Keep your feet on the floor for this exercise, however, if you want to increase the intensity of the exercise, you can walk your feet out a ways from your body or prop them up on a bench or chair.

Here is a great breakfast recipe that is low in fat but will satisfy that sweet tooth for the day!

Cindy's Gingerbread Pancakes

1-cup whole- wheat flour
3/4 t. baking soda
1/2 t. ground ginger
1/2 t. ground cinnamon
1/4 t. ground cloves
3/4 t. salt
2 t. instant decaffeinated coffee powder
1/4 cup hot water
2 egg whites, beaten
6 oz. frozen unsweetened apple juice concentrate, undiluted
2 T. corn oil margarine, melted
Fresh apple butter, optional

1. Combine the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt in a large mixing bowl. In another smaller bowl, dissolve the instant coffee in the hot water. Add the egg, apple juice concentrate, and melted margarine and mix well. Add the liquid ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix just enough to moisten the dry ingredients. The mixture will be lumpy.

2. Spray a hot skillet or griddle with non-stick cooking spray. Spoon the batter, 1/4 cup at a time, onto the hot griddle. Cook until the top of each pancake is covered with tiny bubbles and the bottom is brown. Turn and brown the other side.

3. Place 2 pancakes on each plate and serve with Fresh Apple Butter if desired.
