OLLI e-Newsletter December 2017

Message from the OLLI Board Chair
As the calendar winds down, it is natural to pause to reflect on what has transpired in the preceding 12 months and, based on that, do some planning for the coming year.
2017 was a period of extraordinary growth for OLLI at UC. While this growth is easily measured in increased membership, other areas that may not be as noticeable are critically important to sustaining OLLI’s vitality.
These include, but are not limited to, establishing safety and security procedures for the campuses at Adath Israel and Victory Parkway, exploring potential additional facilities to allow for future growth, revising investment guidelines to stabilize our financial position, developing a member handbook, and refining marketing efforts to reach more potential members.
Based on what has been accomplished and the ongoing initiatives, we enter 2018 with a momentum that will lead to unprecedented heights. Thank you for doing your part as a member of OLLI at UC!

We Remember
Former OLLI moderator Howard Eckstein passed away on Oct. 27. Howard moderated Religion beyond Dogma for many years. In this popular course, panels of religious leaders led discussions about their various beliefs, exemplifying the OLLI commitment to openness to new ideas, civil discussion, and diversity of thought.
Dear OWLI:
When I register online and a class I want to take is full, is it worthwhile to add my name to the wait list or am I just wasting my time?
Signed,
Anxious in Anderson
Dear Anxious:
YES! People change their schedules or drop classes. Sometimes we are able to move a popular class to a larger classroom, or a moderator agrees to accept more people into a class or teach another section of the same class. When any of these happen, we use the wait list to fill available spaces.
Here’s how it works: When a place opens in a full class, we call the first person on the wait list. If we have to leave a message, that person has a limited amount of time to call back (usually a day). We continue down the list until all openings are filled.
Also good to know: You can add your name to wait lists without paying for a membership, so there’s no risk involved. If we have a place for you in the class, we’ll sign you up for membership at the same time.
Sincerely,
OWLI
