With the fall season fast approaching and the NYC school year beginning this week, it's a hectic time for the hard working crew at AFP. But with the hectic times, comes an equal level of excitement.

Visual Artist:: Berette Macaulay
Berette was born in Freetown Sierra Leone, West Africa, raised in Jamaica and the UK and now resides in New York City. Her imagery is heavily influenced by her multicultural background, and also her training and experience as a performer and theater technician.
Fashion Design:: Iliana Quander
Iliana Quander studied color theory with Nichole Neilly and art & design with Kiini Salaam, Lillian Blades and Rashida Ferdinand.
Music:: Rob Kovacs
Return of Simple was founded by Rob Kovacs, the “Best Pianist/Keyboardist in Cleveland” (Cleveland Free Times, 2008). An accomplished musician, Kovacs has extended his resume to include the positions of music director, accompanist, arranger, dueling pianist, lounge act, and even e-card composer.
Filmmaker:: Daniel Maldonado
Daniel is a filmmaker coming out of New York and its underground art culture. Through the exploration of various themes such as identity, he's found his reality through the lenses of contrast. While working for acclaimed executive producer Ben Barenholtz (BARTON FINK), Daniel's made several short films ranging from narrative, stop motion animation, experimental and mock-u-mentary works.
DJ:: Gatto
Gatto's slick and infectious sound has been tantalizing the NYC underground dance music scene for over 10 years. His distinct style and serious mixing skills continue to arouse dance floors in large clubs, underground parties and private events from New York to San Francisco.

AFP presents a Family Music Performance by Jon Samson with Special Guest
Jammin Jenn on Sunday, October 2nd at Coda in Maplewood, New Jersey.
Parents can enjoy a delicious brunch beginning at 12PM while the kids enjoy the performances at 12:30PM.
Each $45 ticket includes brunch for one adult and the musical performance for one child. Tickets are $20 for each additional child.

*Ongoing:: Have Your Music Played at Materials for the Arts!
Materials for the Arts is looking to play albums from local artists during shopping, and then put the CDs out for recipients to take for free. They will let recipients know that the music comes from local bands, and will of course highlight albums that come from fellow recipients. It will be a great way for bands to get exposure, for shoppers to experience awesome music! If interested, or for more information, contact Kevin Stirnweis at Materials for the Arts.

The grand fall opening of .NO takes place on September 7, 6-10 pm. The first show of the season is "Norway Now in NYC." The show will feature the following six artists: Are Blytt, Hans Kristian Borchgrevink Hansen, Gitte Dæhlin, A K Dolven, Terje Nicolaisen and Hanneline Røgeberg. Check out their website for details.

“Chris Twomey: Time, Media, and Significance,” a one-person exhibition sampling works from the artist’s multifaceted career, opens in the Pascal Gallery in the Berrie Center at Ramapo College of New Jersey. An opening reception will be held on September 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. with an artist’s talk at 6:30 p.m.

Rabbithole will be featuring works from Brazilian artists Rose Klabin and Rodolpho Parigi in an exhibition opening FRI 16 SEP 11. These works will be on view until 20 OCT 11.
Both Klabin and Parigi are considered among the most promising new figures in Brazilian contemporary art.

Art For Progress (AFP) is pleased to announce it will be exhibiting at Fountain Art Fair during Miami's Art Basel December 1-4th. We are encouraging both member artists and non members to apply for this exciting opportunity. All fine art including installations will be considered.
The deadline for applications is September 9, 2011 and can be submitted digitally or by mailing in an application form.
*September 26th-29th:: Fall Foliage Plein Air Painting - Workshop Retreat
Join like-minded painters for this restorative plein air retreat at Good Commons in Plymouth, Vermont. Good Commons is an uncommonly enlightened home away from home, where the environs, cuisine & activities are designed to uplift body, mind & spirit. *August 22nd-October 21st:: Open call for Digital Art, Vilcek Foundation
The Vilcek foundation is now accepting submissions of work created by foreign-born artists using computer-based and new media technologies, to be featured in a brand-new digital art space premiering on Vilcek.org in January of 2012. Eligible applicants must be foreign-born (originally foreign citizens) and be permanent US residents (green card holders) or naturalized US citizens. *August 28th-September 23rd:: Creative Time Presents: The Creative Time Summit
Creative Time presents their annual conference bringing together cultural producers to discuss how their work engages pressing issues affecting our world. The Creative Time Summit includes cultural producers whose international projects consist of a vast array of practices and methodologies that engage with the canvas of everyday life. In February 2012 MYS is organizing an Art Workshop involving both Nepali and international artists. We believe that such a trip would not only provide the artists the opportunity to explore less traveled regions of Nepal and express their impressions in their chosen medium but will simultaneously allow an exchange of cultural and artistic insights.
