ICLEI in Warsaw:
ICLEI spurs dialogues to scale up action in Warsaw
During the first week of COP 19, ICLEI stirred preeminent events that showcased, shared and scaled up innovative local climate solutions.  Leveraging the partnership with the City of Warsaw, UNFCCC, networks and cities, ICLEI delivered a strong presence at the UN Workshop on Urbanization, LEDS global partnership session and the World Climate Summit. A full list of city-related events is compiled by ICLEI under the Local Government Climate Roadmap banner and can be accessed on its website.

carbonn Cities Climate Registry 2013 Report: 
414 Cities report over 4,000 climate actions

Looking for inspiration when tackling Climate Change? In its November 2013 report, the carbonn Cities Climate Registry (cCCR) announced that 414 cities reported over 4,000 climate actions which are either completed or in progress until 2020. 63% of the reduction commitments are above 1% per year, exceeding the value of even the most ambitious national governments under the Kyoto Protocol.

Multilevel governance can turn the challenges brought about by rapid urbanization into opportunities. This was emphasized by ICLEI Global Advocacy and Policy Head Yunus Arikan as he opened the ADP 2.3 workshop on urbanization and the role of local governments. Arikan shared the vision of local climate action raising the level of climate ambition. View the:

ICLEI President David Cadman drums up climate action in Nordic Cities 
Coinciding with the COP19/CMP9, ICLEI President David Cadman conducted the Local Government Climate Roadmap – Nordic Capitals Tours - a compilation of events, meetings and consultations with local governments and partners in the capital cities of Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark. The programme was prepared with the strong support of and in close collaboration with Norwegian Association of Local and Regional Authorities – KS Norway and implemented with ICLEI member cities and partners including Oslo, Helsinki, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Swedish Association of Local and Regional Authorities (SALAR) and WWF Sweden.

LEDS partnership side event
Yunus Arikan, ICLEI Head of Global Policy and Advocacy Global Services spoke as a panelist at the LEDS partnership side event on 15 November.  ICLEI is part of the­ Working Group on Subnational Integration of LEDS. It also runs a ground-breaking multi-city project, URBAN-LEDS which aims to enhance the transition of cities in emerging economies to low-emissions development.

Business says: focus on cities 
Cities were the “talk of the day” at the World Climate Summit on 17 November. Most panel discussions centered on the importance of involving cities in the planning and implementation of green policies and innovation.  ICLEI was represented by its President David Cadman who spoke at the panel on national and subnational collaboration while Secretary General Gino Van Begin shared his insightful views at a panel on engaging with the private sector.

21 November Cities Day
21 November marks a monumental day for cities and regions as they gather for the first ever “Cities Day” at the ongoing UN Warsaw Climate Conference (COP19/CMP9). A joint initiative of ICLEI, UNFCCC and partners, the “Cities Day” bundles a series of city-focused events that will showcase and spark local climate action. One of the highlights of the event is the COP Presidency Cities and Sub-national Dialogue where COP19/CMP9 President Marcin Korolec, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, Warsaw Mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz, UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres and ICLEI President David Cadman will be stirring dialogues of Mayors and subnational leaders with Ministers from around the world.
